Semi-weekly Camden journal. [volume] (Camden, South-Carolina) 1851-1852, November 14, 1851, Image 3
five, or perhaps three hundred bales. The
whole of this cotton was planted and cultivated
by the said twelve hands, and the only help
they had was in the picking. To prevent any
misunderstanding of this statement we are authorised
to say that the hales are of the average
weight of those usually made in Texas,
that is about 500 lbs. each.
In addition to the above we nave autnomy
to say that the same twelve hands have raised
and gathered during the season 2,300 bushels
of corn Irom thirty acres of land, which is considerably
bejow the yield of com last year, on
the same plantation. It may be of some interest
here to state that the above crops of
cotton and corn were both planted in February,
which Col. Quarlesthinks is themonth in which
both cotton and com should always be planted
in Texas. The picking of the cotton was
commenced on the 4th of July last.
If, after paying for the extra labor required
to pick the above crop, there shall remain 275
bales, which is the smallest named; then the
net proceeds of the twelve hands will be within
a small fraction of 23 bales each, to which
we must add 191 bushels of corn, to make the
total product of each hand's labor; and this, at
the present prices of cotton and corn, cannos
fall much, if any, short of one thousand dollart
to the hand.

names of Messrs. Williams, Class, Compton,
Lobdell, and Love, who own and cultivate adjoining
plantations, and will bear testimony to
^ its correctness. The land which produced this
crop is of the usual quality of Oyster creek
lands, and indeed of the bottom lands of Texas
generally, of which any one may be readily
convinced by his own observation !?Galveston

Murderous Assault, supposed intended for
John M. Clayton.?The Delaware Gazet'c says,
a fortnight ago, when two gentlemen were
about leaving the door of the Hon. John M.
Clayton's residence at Buena Vista, a revolver
^ was twice snapped in the direction of the
group. The caps exploded without igniting
the charge in either barrel. Mr. C. was absent
from home, and it is supposed that murderous
assault was intended to be made upon
liiin.
A New Light Discovered.?It is said that
Mr. Bates, of Dundas, Canada, has discovered
a mode of producing a beautiful light from a

clear, smokeless, and brilliant; perfectly safe,
and can be produced at so very trifling a cost
that, if it turns out as described, it must supersede
the use of all descriptions of artificial
light now in use. It is the intention of the inventor
shortly to exhibit the results of this invention
to the public, and to apply for a patent.
The Union.?A co-operation friend in conversation
said to us the other day, that lie
thought the Union stronger noir, than since
the day< of Nullification. We expressed a very
ditferent opinion to hiui, at the time which
^ opinion is confirmed by the reflection. Was
there ever a time before, when in the four States
of .Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and South
Carolina, there were 150,000 rulers in favor of
a dissolution of the Union { We think not.

A Quick Trip Akocjcd tiik World.?The
bark Hazard (of Salem) Capt, A. Barstow,
which arrived af New-York, 1st inst, lias made
the voyage around the world in six days less
than one year. This is the more remarkable
when it is considered that she visited three I
ports, having sailed from New York Nov. 7, (
1850, arrived at San Francisco, March 17, i
1851, sailed thence to Ilong Kong, and thence j
against a head monsoon to Bataviu, where she i

MAN A'STUDENT
BY PR. CIIANNING.
When I say that man is tc be a Student, I
do not mean that he is to shut himself up between
four walls, and bend tnind and body over
books. Men thought before books were written,
and some of the greatest thinkers never entered
what we call a study.
Nature, Scripture, society, present perpetual
subjects for thonght; and the man who collects,
concentrates, employs his faculties on any of
these subjects for the purpose of getting the !
p. truth, is so far a student, a thinker, a philosoper,
and is rising to the dignity of a man. It is time
that we should cease to limit to professed scholars
the title of thinkers, philosophers. Whoever
sees truth with an earnest mind, no matter when
or how, belongs to the school of intellectual
men.
In a loose sense of the word, all men may be
said to think; that is, a succession of ideas,
notions, passes through their minds from morning
till night; but in far as this succession is
passive, undirected, or governed only by accident
or outward impulse, it has little more claim
to dignity than the experience of the brute, who
receives with like passiveness sensationTrom
abroad through his waking hours. Such thought
if thought it may be called, having no aim, is as
useless as the vision of an eye which rests on
nothing, which flies without pause over earth
and sky, and receives no distinct image,
Thought, in its true sense, is an energy of
intellect. In thought the mind not only receives ,
impressions or suggesiions from within, hut re- >
acts upon them, collects its attention, conceit- '
trates its force upon them, breaks them up and
analyzes them like a Jiving laboratory, ami men
combines them anew traces their connections, |
ami thus impresses itsolf upon all the objects
* which engage it.
The universe in which we live was plainly
intended by God to stir up such thoughts as j
has now been described.
True frudence is to see from the commence- !
ment of an affair what will be the end of it. !

and threatened to flog the editor if he stopped
