I Secretar'*sCurious Facts from the Census.?A writer in one of the New York religious papers is com paring the census returns in regard to the nreV' alence of insanity, between the whites and th< Slacks, and tiie relativs proportion. The facts adduced show that insanity is greatest arpon?j the free blacks. In the State of Maine every fourteenth colored person is an idiot ora lunatic And though there is a gradual improvement in die condition of the colored race, as we proceec west and South, yet it is evident that the fre< States are the principal cbodes of idiocy ant lunacy among them. In Ohio there are jus; p ten colotvd persons who are idiots or lunatics " vIff And in Loui where there is one m n.m - ... siana, where a large majority of thepopulatioi is colored, and four-fifths of Uiein are slaves there is bat one of these unfortunates to 4,309 who are sane. The proportions in other States according to the census of 1840; are as follows In Massachusetts 1 in 43; Connecticut 1 it * 185; New York 1 in 257; Pennsylvania 1 it 256; Maryland 1 in 1,074; Virginia 1 in 1,300 North Carolina 1 in 1215; South Carolina 1 it 2,440; Ohio 1 in 1,05; Kentucky 1 in 1,053 This is certainly a very curious calculation ant indicates that diseases of the brain are far mor< rare among the slaves than among the free o the colored race.
