NOT from the lack of Newspapers in the Palmetto-State, nor from their want of ability?for we feel proad to know that the Press of South Carolina will compare favorably with that of any State in the Union?are we induced to anticipate the Buccess of the Illustrated Family Friend. Hut, whilst cheerfully acknowledging the marked and unmistakeable talent displayed in the management of our cotemporaries, and cordially wishing them a full support aud generous patronage> we yet think there is an ample field, now unoccupied, for the growth and expansion of the paper which it will be our endeavor to make, not oniy nominally the Family Friend, but really and incerelv the Friend?leal, loval and true-?of ev ery family in the State. The fierce and fiery discussion of party politics, the useful, but dry records of commerce and traffic, as leading features, we will leave for the pens now so active and eloquent in their service ; and whilst we will give to both subjects, as much space as will be desirable to the general reader, our greatest object and principal aim will be, the evo)7ement, elucidation and exaltation, of the Pure, the Beautiful, the Useful and Instructive, in the paths of Morality, Virtue, Literature, Science, Art and Agriculture. The Ideal being more easily comprehended and more captivating, when combined in some degree with the Material?we will bring the Artist's skillful band into requisition to illustrate the mind's conceptions, and to rendor the Family Friend as nearly perfect as it is possible to make a physical means adapted to a mental end. To effect ends so desirable, what means can be imagined more likely to prove efficacious, than would familiarity with the painful struggles undergone, the privations borne, the difficulties overcome, by men now liv^ ing, who have distinguished themselves, either as Scholars, Statesmen, Politicians, Jurists, Physicians, Divines, Authors, Artists, Merchants, Mechanics, Military men, or Agriculturists. Consequently, as a new, and we think very valuable feature, we will give IN EVERY ISSUE. A CORRECT LIKENESS OF SOME PROMINENT SOUTH CAROLINIAN, WITH AN AUTHENTIC BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH. One instance in particular, in Which toe superior virtues of this medicine have been tested, has fallen tinder our observation. "We again rail attention to the removal of the German Medicine store, the principal depot for the sale of Dr Hoofland's German Bitters, from 278 Race to 120 Arch street, one door below Sixth. Owing to the increasedi demand for this medicine, and for the accommodation of his numerous patients, Dr, Jackson has been compelled to occupy a larger store. We wish him success in his new quarters; he is deserving of it. The Bitters Mixture is without doubt the greatest medicine extant for diseases of the Liver and Bowels. A stubborn case of Chronic Diarrhoea has come under our notice, wherein the patient had exhausted the | Materia Modicas of the different schools of medicine with no apparent benefit. He was induced to uso these bitters, and a few bottles of them have entirely cured him: Many uch cases we could refer to. We hope our readers will | recollect this great restorative, should they be to unfortunate as to require its use. Dr. Jackson possesses the original unpublisned receipt of Dr. Hoofland, and he prepares this medicine with this care. Those purchasing should call at his store, or see that his name is written upon the wrapper outside, and blown in the bottle, as imitations of all good articles are common.'' Judge M. M.Noah, a gentleman with great scientific and literary attainments,said in his "New York Weekly Messenger, Jan. 6. 1850, "Dr. Hooflahu's German Bitters.?Here is a preparation which Oie leading presses in the Union appear to oe unanimous in recommending, and the reason is obvious. It is made after a prescription furnished by one of the most celebrated phvsicians of modern tim s, the late Dr. Christopher Wilhelm Iloofland, Professor to the University ol Jena, Private Physician to the King of Prussia, ami one oi the greatest medical writers Germany has ever produced. He was emphatically the enemy of humbug, and therefore a medicine of which he was the inventor and endorser may be confidently relied on. II* specially recommended it in liver complaint, dyspepsia, debility, vertigo, acidity of the stomach, constipation, and all complaints arising from a disordered condition of the stomach, the liver and the intestines. Nine Philadelphia papers express their conviction of its excellence, and several of the editor* speak ol its effects from their own individual experience.
