But, whilst cheerfully acknowledging the marked
and unmistakeable talent displayed in the
management of our cotemporaries, and cordially
wishing them a fuil support and generous patronage,
we yet think there is an ample field, now tin
occupied, for the growth and expansion of the paper
which it will be our endeavor to make, not only
nominally the Family Friend, but really and
sincerely the Friend?leal, loyal an* true?of every
family in the State.
The fierce and fiery discussion of party politics,
the useful, but dry records of commerce and traffic,
as leading features, we will leave for the pens
now 60 active and eloquent in their service ; and
whilst we will give to both subjects, as much
sp*ce as will be desirable to the general reader,
our greatest object ai.d principal aim will be, the
evolvement, elucidation and exaltation, of the !
Pore, the Beautiful, the Useful and Instructive, in i
the paths of Morality, Virtue, Literature, Science,
Art and Agriculture.
The Ideal being more easily comprehended and
more captivating, when combined in some degree
with the Material?we will bring the Artist's skillful
hand into requisition to illustrate the mind's
conceptions, and to render the Family Friend as
nearly perfect as it is possible to make a physical
means adapted to a mental end. In every number,
therefore, we will give, in addition to a large
amount of original reading matter from the pens of
WRITERS OF ACKNOWLEDGED POWER
AND GENIUS,
AT LEAST
FOUR HANDSOME, PERT I NEST,
AND ELEGANTLY EXECUTED ENGRAVINGS.
To stimulate the young to renewed exertions
in ihe pursuit of knowledge, fame and fortune?
and to encourage those who have already entered
upon the actualities of life, to persevere and be
steadfast in their strivings onward and upward
towards the goal of their hopes, lias in all ages and
in alt countries, been considered an object worthy
ofiho noblest ambition. To effect ends so desirable,
what means can be imagined more likely
to prove efficacious, than would familiarity with
tbo painful struggles undergone, the privations
borne, the difficulties overcome, by men now liv_
ing, who have distinguished themselves, either as

These are brief, very brief hints, at the intentions
and purposes of the Illustrated Family
Friend?the narrow limits of a Prospectus will
not permit us to make them more lull; but scant
as they are, we trust they are ample enough, to
ooaceiveevery candid and intelligent person, that
though we intend not to boast, we design puplishing
a paper that will be worthy a liberal support.

As it is our intention to make the Family Friend
a permanent publication, upon which the fridnds
who aid it now, in its infancy, may look with increasing
pleasure as it improves with tears?everything
connected with its mechanical arrangement
will be of the best quality. The Family
Friend will be issued weekly?printed on a Large
Imperial sheet of fine white paper, with beautiful,
clear type: and will be furnished to subscribers
at 82 per annum : one dollar to be paid on the
receipt of the fire? number, and one dollar at the I
expiration of six months.

The Faculties, for intellectual abilities, moral
worlh and professional acquirements, will compare
favt rahle with the most distinguished in our coun
try. The medical faculty constitutes an anomaly
in this or any other country?all of thern are able
lecturers and the best of teachers.
Those who will contemplate our geographical
position, and the extent of our population, can have
no doubt as to the eligibility ofoui situation for an
enterprise of the kind. As to health, including
all seasons of the year, we deny that any other
CITY HAS MORE.
A common error exists in the minds of many
students relative to the place of studying medicine;
those who intend practicing among the diseases ol
the West and South should certainly educate
themselves ata school whose faculty are practically
acquainted with those diseases.
That the public may be satisfied of the permanency
of this school, we feel it our duty to state,
that the Trustees and Faculty form a unit in action
which augurs well for its luture success; and that
the peculiar internal organization which connects
them, cannot be interrupted.

after nsing it, was so much relieved of his distressing malady
that he procur&d another bottle, and is restored entirely
to health.

The "Philadelphia Democrat," the leading German journal
of Philadelphia. The editor said, Nov 24lh?
"We again call attention to the removal of the German
Medicine store, the principal depot for the sale of Dr Hoofland's
German Bitters, from 278 Race to 120 Arch street,
one door below Sixth. Owing to the increased demand
for this medicine, and for the accommodation of his numerous
patients, Dr, Jackson has been compelled to occupy a
larger store. We wish him success in his new quarters;
he is deserving of it. The Bitters Mixture is withontdoubt
the greatest medicine extant for diseases of the Liver and
Bowels. A stubborn case of Chronic Diarrhcca has come
under our notice, wherein the patient had exhausted the
Materia Medicas of the different schools of medicine with
no apparent benefit. He was induced to use these bitters,
and a few bottles of them have entirely cured him: 3Iany
uch cases we could refer to. We hope our readers will
recollect this great restorative, should they be so unfortunate
as to require its use. Dr. Jackson possesses lite original
unpublished receipt of Dr. Ilooftand, and he prepares
this medicine with this care. Those purchasing should
call at his store, or see that his name is written upon the
wrapper outside, and blown in the bottle, as imitations of
all good articles are common."

literary attainments,said in his "New York Weekly Messenger,

Jetia. Private Physician to the King of Prussia, and one of
the greatest medical writers Germany 1ms ever produced,
lie was emphatically the enemy of humbug, and therefore

liver complaint, dyspepsia, uemiiiy, vertigo, ncuiuy oi me

its effects from their own individual experience. Under
these ciirumstanccs we feel warranted not only in calling
tho attention of our readers to the present proprietor's (Dr.
C. M, Jackson's) preparation, but in recommending the article
to all afflicted."
