PROSPECTUS
OF TIXE
ILLUSTRATED FAMILY FRIEND.
A NEW PAPER,
For the Fireside, the Parlor, and the Leisure
Moment.
TO BE PUBLISHED
In Columbia, S. C., on the first of November next,
v _
S. A. QOJjmAJX ,
Late Editor of the Laurensville, S. C. "Herald," Author
of "The Slaver," "For'ard and Aft," "The Ocean
Born,"&c., &c.
NOT from the lack of Newspapers in the Palmetto-State,
nor from their want of ability?for we
feel proud to know that the Press of South Carolina
will compare favorably with that of any State
in the Union?are we induced to anticipate the
success of the Illustrated Family Friend.
But, whilst cheerfully acknowledging the marked
and unmistakeable talent displayed in the
management of our cotemporaries, and cordially
wishing them a full support and generous patronage,
we yet think there is an ample field, now unoccupied,
for the growth and expansion of the paper
which it will be our endeavor to make, not onlw
nnminallv the Familv Friend, but really and
sincerely the Friend?leal, loyal anl true?of every
family in the State.
The fierce and fiery discussion of party politics,
the useful, but dry records of commerce and traffic,
as leading features, we will leave for the pens
now so active anu eloquent in their service ; and
whilst we will give to both subjects, as much
space as will be desirable to the general reader,
our greatest object and principal aim will be, the
evolvement, elucidation and exaltation, of the
Pure, the Beautiful, the Useful and Instructive, in
the paths of Morality, Virtue, Literature, Science,
Art and Agriculture.
The Ideal being more easily comprehended and
more captivating, when combined in some degree
with the Material?we will bring the Artist's skillful
hand into requisition to illustrate the mind's
conceptions, and to render the Family Friend as
nearly perfect as it is possible to make a physical
means adapted to a mental end. In every number,
therefore, we will give, in addition to a large
amount of original reading matter from the pens of
WRITERS OF ACKNOWLEDGED POWER
AND GENIUS,
AT LEAST
FO UR HA NDSOME, PE R TINEN T,
AND ELEGANTLY EXECUTED ENV
- V v- GRAVINGS.
T6 stfniuTatn the young to renewed exertions
in ihe pursuit o? knowledge, fame and fortune?
and to encourage those who have already entered
upon the actualities of life, to persevere and be
steadfast in their strivings onward and upward
towards the goal of their hopes, has in all ages and
in all countries, been considered an object worthy
of tho noblest ambition. To effect ends so desi
rable, what means can be imagined more JiKeiy
to prove efficacious, than would familiarity with
the painful struggles undergone, the privations
borne, the difficulties overcome, by men now livj
ing, who have distinguished themselves, either as
Scholars, Statesmen, Politicians, Jurists, Physicians,
Divines, Authors, Artists, Merchants, Mechanics,
Military men, or Agriculturists. Consequently,
as a new, and we think very valuable
feature, we will give
IN EVERY ISSUE.
A CORRECT LIKENESS OF SOME PROMINENT
SOUTH CAROLINIAN,
WITH AN AUTHENTIC BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH.
These are brief, very brief hints, at the intentions
and purposes of the Illustrated Family
Friend?the narrow limits of a Prospectus will
not permit us to make them more full ; but scant
as they are, we tru6t they are ample enough, to 1
conceive every candid and intelligent person, that
though we intend not to boast, we design puplishing
a paper that will be worthy a liberal support.
As it is our intention to make the Family Friend
a permanent publication, upon which the friends
who aid it now, in its infancy, may look with increasing
pleasure as it improves with years?everything
connected with its mechanical arrangerndfc
will be of the best quality. The Family
EPPnd will be issued weekly?printed on a Large
Imperial sheet of fine white paper, with beautiful,
clear type; and will be furnished to subscribers
at 82 per annum : one dollar to be paid on the
receipt of the first number, and one dollar at the
expiration of six months.

Memphis, Tcnn., March 1950.
The Faculties, for intellectual abilitiest moral
worth and professional acquirements, will compare
favorable with the most distinguished in our coun
try. The medical faculty constitutes an anomaly
in this or any other country?all of them are able
lecturers and the best of teachers.
Those who will contemplate our geographical
position, and the extent of our population, can have
no doubt as to the eligibility of out situation for an
enterprise of the kind. As to health, including
all seasons of the year, we deny that any other
city has more.
A common error exists in th^ minds of many
students relative to the place of studying medicine;
those who intend practicing among the diseases o!
the West and South should certainly educate
themselves ata school whose faculty are practically
acquainted with those diseases.
That the public may be satisfied of the permanency
of this school, we feel it our duty to Btate,
that the Trustees and Faculty form a unit in action
which augurs well for its future success; and that
the peculiar internal organization which connects
them, cannot be interrupted.

jCELEBRATED GERMAN BITTERS,
PREPARED BV
DR. C. in. JACKSON,
IT THEiOERMAN.MEDICINE STORE,
120 Arch Street, Philadelphia.
Tlieirpower over the above diseases is not excelled, i,
equalled, by any other preparation in the United States
as the cures attest, in many cases after skilful pliyicians,
had failed.
These Bitters are worthy the attention of invalids. Possessing
great virtues in the rectification of diseases of the
Liver and lesser glands, exercising the most searching
[towers in weakness and aflectionsof the digestive organs,
they are, withal, safe, certain and pleasant.
HEAD AND BE CONVINCED.
Chas. Robinson, Esq., Easton, Md., in a letter to Dr.
Jackson, Jan. 9, 1850, said?
" My wife and myself have received more benefit from
your medicine than anv other wc have ever taken for the
Dyspepsia and Liver disease."
" The Tenth Legion," published at Woodstoek, Va.,
Jan. 10, 1850, said?
"A C.ltEAT MEDICINE."
"We have uniformly refrained from recommending to
the public any of the various Patent Medicines of the day,
unless thoroughly convinced of tlieir value. Among those
we consider worthy of notice is the Herman Bitters, invented
by Dr. Iloofland.and prepared by Dr. Jackson, in Philadelphia.
One instance in particular, in which the superior
virtues of this medicine have been tested, has fallen
under our observation. During the last summer, a son of
Mr. Abraham Brabill, of this country, was very seriously
afflicted with Liver Complaint, ana niter trying in vn.ui
various remedies, lie purchased a bottle of the Bitters and
after nsing it, wus so much relieved of his distressing malady
that he procured another bottle, and is restored entirely
to health.
BEAD FURTHER A FEW FACTS.
The''Philadelphia Democrat," the leading German journalof
Philadelphia. The editor said, Nov 24th? ,
"We again call attention to the removal of the German
Medicine store, the principal depot (or the sale of Dr. Iloofland's
German Bitters, from 278 Itaee to 120 Arch street,
one door below Sixth. Owing to the increased demand
for this mpdicine, and for the accommodation of his numerous
patients, Dr. Jackson has been compelled to occupy a
laraer store. We wish him success in his new quarters;
he is deserving of it. The Bitters Mixture is without doubt
the greatest medicine extant for diseases of the Liver and
Bowels. A stubborn case of Chronic Diarrhoea lias come
nnderonr notice, wherein the patient had exhausted the
Materia Medicaa of the different schools of medicine with
no apparent benefit. He was induced to use. these bitters,
and a few bottles of them have entirely cured him: Many
ucli eases we could refer to. We hope our readers will
recollect this great restorative, should they be so unfortunate
as to require its use. Dr. Jackson possesses the original
unpublished receipt of Dr. Iloofiand, and he prepares
this medicine with this care. Those purchasing should
call at his store, or see that his name is written upon the
wrapper outside, and blown in the bottle, as imitations of
all good articles are common."
Judge M. M.Noah, a gentleman with great scientific and
literary attainments, said in his "New York Weekly Messenger,
Jan. 6. 1850,
"])a. IIooflanu's German Bitters.?Here is a preparation
which the leading presses in the Union appear to
he unanimous in recommending, and the reason is obvious.
It is made after a prescription furnished hy one of the most
celebrated phvsicinns of modern tim s, the late Dr. Christoplier
Wiliiclm iloofiand, Professor to the University of
Jena. Private Physician to the King of Prussia, and one of
the greatest medical writers Germany has ever produced*
lie was emphatically the enemy of humbug, and therefore
a medicine of which he was the inventor mid endorser may
lie confidently relied on. lie socially recommended it in
liver complaint, dyspepsia, debility, vertigo, acidity of the
stomach, constipation, and all complaints arising from a
disordered condition of the stomach, the liver and the intestines.
Nine Philadelphia papers express their conviction
of its excellence, and several of the editors speak of
its effects from their own individual experience. Under
these ciicnmstanccs we feel warranted not only in railing
tho attention of our readers to the present proprietor's (Dr.
C. M, Jackson's) preparation, but in recommending the article
to all afflicted."
MOKE EVIDENCE.
The " Philadelphia Saturday (lazclte," the best family
newspaper pnldished in the United States, the editor saysof
DE. IIOOFI.ANDS t? Kit MAX HITTERS.
'It is seldom that wc recommend what are termed Patent
Medicines to the confidence and patronage of our readers.
and therefore, when we recommend Dr. Iloofland's
Herman Hitters, we wish it to be distinctly understood that
we are not speaking of the nostrums of the day, that are
noised about forabrief period and then forgotten after they
have done their guilty ^acc of mischief, but of a medicine
longeitaclished, universally prized, and which has met
thehearty approval of the Faculty itself.'
Evidence upon evidence has been received (like the
foregoing) from all sections of the Union, the last three
years, ami the strongest tesiimony in its favor.i-. that there
is more of it usep in the practice, of the regular Physicians
of Philadslphia than all other nostrums combined, a fact
that can easily be established, and fully proving that a
scientific preparation will meet with their (ptiet approval
when presented even in this form.
