Jenny JAvd.?We are sorry to see that Jenny
Litid, Rarnam's "good angel," has been
again hauled up before the SheiifT to testify in
. regard to the non-fuliilmcut of a contract with
L. the lesse of the Chestnut street theatre, Philadelphia.
The telegraph reports that she was
greatly annoyed, and we don't wonder at it.
One Step More.?The Senate of Massachu
setts -passed unanimously (except lour dissenting
voices) the following:
Resolved, That Massachusetts affirms anew
her hostility to slavery and her devotion to the
Union, that, inspired by tiiese cherished sentiments,
she longs for harmony among the different
parts ol our common country; but site can
not conceal the conviction that this can he finally
and permanently secured only by the overthrow
of slavery, so far as the same can be
constitutionally doue, everywhere within the
jurisdiction of the national government; that
the free States may be relieved from all responsibility
therefor, so that freedom, instead of
slavery sluill become national, and slavery, instead
of freedom, become sectional.
Massachusetts, we see, is loud for the Union,
and yet here is a resolution passed by her higiii

Tallahassee, May 6.
Storm &e.?On Sunday afternoon last a
violent squall set in from the N. \V. bringing
haile and n prodigious fall of rain which lasted
^ some four or five hours, and must have done a
great deal of gam age to the planters in the vicinity.
'lTie mi.i literally fell in torents, and
level ground was covered with a sheet of water.
The wash must have been tremendous on
rolling ploughed lands. The hail, we think,
was too light to have done much injury.
The season thus far has been very unpropituous
for crops in this vicinity. The weather
has been remarkable cool, and up to this
time there have not been more than some three
or four days in which thin garments would have
been comfortable.

That a more favorable junction for a dissolu- |

"It is a great responsibility, I admit. But

ANOTHER FREE-SOiLEK APPOINTED
BY FILLMOliE.
"Grafton Baker of Missouri, lias been :i|?poiutedby
President Fillmore, Chief Justice of
the Supremo Court of the United States, for
the territory of New Mexico. It is we!! known
that (Jiafton Bilker in tlio canvass of 1848
and 1849, contended on the stump, that the
lcxlnri of our Mexican territory would prevail
despite the Constitution, and we have no doubt
his appointment was made with that view of
.the qeustion."?Southern Argus.
This is the course pursued in regard to the
"Territories, and we suppose that as vacancies
occurred in the Supreme Court of the United
States the appointments will he made out of
the Free-soil ranks, until at last, even the abolitionists
will be willing to leave to that tribunal
the decision of all questions touching South
ern rights. When the Supremo Court shall
have come to thU complexion, the Southern
inan \^ho refuses to submit to its decision will
bo branded as a traitor by the Northern press,
to which their Southern allies will say amen!
