C., (we mean Anson 1 and are in all probability, through Union to Mecklenburg; then draw the Manchester Rail Road through Sumterville near Darlington, through Marion to Wilmington, and the picture is complete. We entreat you to study it well, and do not lay the "flattering unction to your souls," that these Roads will not be built. They will be built, mark it! just so sure as that our Branch / Rail Road was built, despite the ;wise shakings of the head, and sneers of those who fancied that they would be injured by it. This is clearly our right, and we believe we have ( i only to ask for It to obtain it. There was a violent snow storm at the North on Monday last. In western Maryland the snow was 5 inches, and in some portions of Pennsvlvav* nia 18 inches deep. ? ?if~The rumor is current in our exchanges that the Hon. Josiah J. Evans intends resigning the office of Judge at the next session of the Legislature. Steam Boat Burnt. The steamer Webster, bound to New Orleans from Cincinnati, caught fire on Friday last, about one hundred miles above Vicksburg, and was entirely consumed. Thirty or forty persons, including the captain and his wife, and the two clerks were burned, or drowned in attempting to escape from the flames. i ?.TKnrn ic n fOnQQ ftf OVIHfK ? ! ? Mv, v im k men at the South, who, ranging themselves under the banner of the Union under all circumstances, are doing more to effect the abolition of slavery than the fanatics of the North. These characters are really and truly abolitionists, and ought to be called the Southern abolitionist party. The reason is plain. The abolition party at the North is now powerful and formidable. ^They set out with the avowed and * sworn purposes to effect the extinction of slate* very. The party has been growing ever since ' the year 1818, is growing now, and will continue to grow. It is composed of materials, rpekless. wild, and enthusiastic, that will not | I>e foiled or discouraged. They havo sworn to succeed. Their numbers are increasing. ^ Their influence is becoming a matter of imporift, tnuce to the Government. Constant dropping will wear away a stone. Unwearied and unremitting exertions will overcome all obstacles. Have they ever disavowed their purpose ? Is there any evidence that they have suspended their efforts ? Southern men cry out that they V go for the Union at all hazards and under all circumstances, even at the sacrifice of slavery. That the States have no l ight to secede. That the Union is obliged to hang together, come weal or come woe. Who has not sense enough to see, that if this doctrine is established, the Abolitionists will be emboldened, and that the institution of slavery is doomed to fall before their incessant aggressions? These are the men fellow-citizens who under the disguise of Union, Union men, Union party, would set your neg. oes free, would place them upon an equality with yourselves, to involve your coun. try in bloodshed and rain, to burn yourdwel- i lings at night, to violate and butcher your ; wives, to intermarry with your sons and daughters.
