DEATH OF DUNCAN DOUGLASS
Mr. Duncan Douglass died thc30th
of September and was buried the following
Saturday. His death came as i
a shock to the whole community. He
had a wide circle of friends and was
loved by all who knew him. He lived ,
a good life. He was 72 years of age.
He leaves a wife and the following
children to mourn his death:
Mr. J. L. Douglass, Mr. D. V.
Douglass and Mrs. Sandy McNair.
DEMOCRATIC DOLLARS
Tkera is great danger of the Re- .
publicans electing the next President
three weeks hence and all for the
lack of Democratic money. Snail Governor
Cox, the Democratic nominee, .
be defeated because the Southern
Democrats refuse to support their
party? The Republicans have the
money?plenty of it. The Democrats
eed sufficient funds to meet actual
expenses. An appeal is made that the
Democrats of Chesterfield County 1
send in their dollars to Treasurer C.
C. Douglass at once. The south will
see some hard times that will be hard
times if the Republicans elect the
next President. It has been under a
Democratic President that prosperity
has smiled on the southern people.
The folowing additional subscriptions
of one dolalr each have been received:
J. W. Ousley, S. A. Teal, Miss M.
B. Hanna, Miss Cora Craig and the
Rev. B. J. Guess.

Mr. Editor:
I Will you kindly give this the same
i prominence that you did an article ]\]
written by Mr. Sam J. Sellers rola- |u
, tive to th-' condition of the Poor 01
House? * c,
The writer was chairman of the tl
sub-commit ;e appointed by the jr.
Foreman of the Grand Jury to in- C(
spect the I 'or House and farm. We t.<
found cone '.ions over there just a>;
we reporte-i it, and I consider it a t.(

unfortunati i who have to accept alms
from the | ublic are forced to live |)(
under such onditions as we found at
the Poor 11. use On September 27th. (),
The official who have charge of the tv
Poor House leserve the severest orili- |
cism for their neglect. y
We found the bedding and premises
disgust ngly filthy and foul. It ti
would have been impossible to clean w
the bed clothes and put them in a half .,]
presentable condition. We found j,,
other thin} thcya that we cannot p|
mention in print that showed an ut- j.j
ter disregar 1 for the health of the
poor unfortunate inmates. I
The oflicirIs, after the report of the
(Jrand Jury wasj made, got busy,
bought some new bedding and did a ](J
little cleaning up, and then invited
Mr. Sam J. Sellers to inspect the
Poor llou _ arid give the lie
to the Grand Jury and bring their report
into di -.credit with the public.
Mr. Sellers according to his report
found every'hing just as it should bo
except that a few Bibles shou'd be >
given the i: mates. The bed clothes I
were clean and sanitary according to j
him and the inmates seemed to bo j
content and happy, well fed and pros- |
perous, all of which was in direct i
conflict with the ftiport made by the j
Grand Jury of Chesterfield County. '
Mr. Sellers sayi he was invited by j
nnn af tvws ^'ah^ ^
this inspection and he did not know j
at the time the Grand Jury had made |
any report, lie was out of his place, ;
and it does seem that a man of ordi- |
nary intelligence would suspect some- I
thing when he was asked to do as un- I
usual a thing as"-^ make an inspec- i
tion of the County Poor House, and j
he nothing more than a private citi- i
zen. As to the Official who had all ?
this done in order to discredit the re- f
port made by the Grand Jury, the |
least that can be said is that he is in j
contempt of a co-ordinate branch of i
the Court of General Sessions of f
Chesterfield County. Any report that !
conditions at the Poor Hiuse were j
not as the Grand Jury reported them f
on September 27th is absolutely false f
regardless of the source from which i
it emanates. j

WILD RUMORS OF NIGHT !
RIDERS AND GIN BURNERS j
For the past week tales of notices f
| stuck up on cotton gins in all parts !
of Chesterfield County have been cir- |
culating freely. According to the i
tales no gin in the county has es- j
caned. Everv irin is said to have been i
posted with a sign, in some cases j
written in blood and attached to the f
gin with a match, notifying the owner I
to shut down until higher prices for j
cotton arc attained, or take the con- i
sequences, which the match would |
imply, meant burning. It was report- j
erl that sum" gins had already been j J
burned and that others had stopped I
operations and hud returned ungin-' f
ned cotton to its owners. The climax j j
was reached Wednesday morning |
when a farmer from a remote corner j
of the county arrived at Chesterfield ,
and expressed surprise that the gins f
were running. It had been reported in I
his neighborhood that all gins in and |
near Chesterfield had either been j
destroyed or the owners had shut j
down in fear and trembling.
Telephonic communication with j
gins throughout the county found ' !
them all running to full capacity and j
no one had received a warning. No ' j
one could be found who had seen such ' j
a warning. I j

Mr. Grant was accompanied bj

The first plant raided was betweer

After this raid the officers discover
1 evidences of peach brandy manu

sen issued for Smith.
On Friday the officers journeyei
/or to a spot on Juniper Creek, be
veen Cheraw and Patrick, and found
200 gallons of "beer" and evidences
lat an enormous distillery had hasly
been torn from its brick founda

ell-worn wagon road leading to this
lace indicated the large amount ol
usiness that had been done. This
lant was on the land of Howard
