W. l.onn of the Extension i Service announces a conference of - official graders and cotton buyers in Columbia, September 7th, to discuss nroblems of the rot ton irrsnlitnr . iwL* 3 ^ and to bvinjr about a proper understanding to the policy of the Bureau of Markets, the duties and rew sponsihilities of oftieial graders, etc. The conference will he held at the Jelferson hotel at 1 1 :30 A. M., and a letter is bcinvr sent to all cotton mills and cotton buyers to attend and take part. OtHcials of the American Cotton Association and representa tives of the Bureau of Markets will be present also. The extracts below from Director Long's letter will be ?>f interest in explaining the matter: "The Bureau of Markets of the United States Department of Agriculture has apointed a number of cotton graders throughout the cotton belt during the l ist severl years. The Department's object is to demonstrate the advisability of having the farmer's cotton graded an.I stapled *>y a competent disinterested party. The Department feels that the farmer should have the same information as to the jrrade and staple of his cotton as the prospetive buyer; the Department also feels that thi service will be welcomed by cotton buyers | as it removes the possibility of sus pieion from I he mind of the farmer as to the buyer not grading and stapling his cotton properly. "Two-thirds of the counties of the State have made application for the appointment of these graders. We have secured a sufficient number of these graders to supply twenty counties. "We want to disabuse the minds of I the cotton trade that these men are I in any way antagonistic to their interests; we want the cotton trade to understand that these men are to serve impartially the buyer and the seller. The Government is determined that this first step in the scientific marketing of the farmer's cotton A .. A legal contract to be signed 1 the farmers providing a penalty tile courts for the violation there was enthusiastically approved and was declared that the contract wou be signed by every farmer in Sou Carolina, white and colored. The convention with a cheer pas ed tin- resolution calling foi the 1 tircment of 2f> per cent, of the nt crop from the market. A resolutn unanimously adopted by the eonve tion warned the world that the fan ers of the South would not long grow cotton and sell it at a price h low a reaonablc profit.
