SHOOTING AFFRAY AT RUBY {
Last Saturday night at Ruby the i
'concert" of the BrajiiRlan Herb *
'Doctor" was abruptly terminated
[
when a fight started and the flash of |
i pistol and its report in the midst of
the crowd caused the audience to <
scatter in various directions. The en- 5
tertainers, both of them, are also re- J
ported to have vanished from the j
scene with lightning-like rapidity. As ,
a result of the encounter Van Camp- i
bell is laid up with a slight wound in 1
the side and Kinmore Sellers is under*1
bond charged with carrying a con- ,
cealed weapon and with assault with (
intent to kill. There had beetn a 1
LCrudge between the two young men
for sometime. When they met in the
the crowd Saturday night a fight
started. Whether Mr. Campbell
struck a blow is not known. He re- |
ceived a blow on the forehead and
the next instant a shot in the side.
Mr. Sidlney Smith, who was standing
near, seized the hand of Mr. Sellers
just as the shot was fired. He receiv- i
ed a powder burn. When the men
were separated it was soon seen that
Mr. Campbell was not seriousv in
jured, the bullet passing through the :
flesh only. Mr. Sellers was brought to
Chesterfield and placed in custody.
It is thought that Mr. Campbell will
be about in a few days.

iRMY WORM WORRIES
fAKMtKS MLKr.AuUU I 3
From various parts of the county
eports of damages by the army
vorm. In most cases the damage re>orted
has been slight, but in rare
nstancer. entire fields have been ruinsd.
Cotton has suffered little, if any.
dost of the damage so far reported
las been to corn and pasturage.
Some of our farmers have been
considerably worried lest this pest
diould destroy the crops entirely, but
there is no possibility of such a thing
happening. In fact the army worm
las done its worst and in a few days
will have passed out of existence. Its
natural span of life is lortunately only
eight or ten days and this period is
jenerally shortened several days by
a certain kind of fly that follows the
worm anl lays eggs on its back. These
eggs, hatching, produce a niagot that
bores into the army worm and kills it.
The worm that is at present causing
some damage is not the regular
army worm that worked such havoc
in 1911. This worm, unlike the regular
army worm does not march in a
given direction destroying all before
it; but usually spreads in all directions
from the ph ce it cornes forth
from the ground. It feeds principally
on grass and young corn but in the
absence of these will attack cotton,
cutting o<T the leaver but seldom, if
ever boring into the bolsl or eating
the blooms.
It is now about time for the last
summer generation of the pest, but
t?s cr.tnn lil'lilior.rl of ??oofVw?v
generation appealing several weeks
later. These will not do much harm
as crops will then bo w?o far rdvancod
to be enticing to the worm, which
is essentially a feeder on tender
green stuff.
The worm is the offspring of a
moth which lays its eggs in the
ground. About two weeks are required
for the hatching and appearance
above the ground of the worm.
The worm is described as grayish
on the back with three white stripes,
one on each side and one down the
back. On the front of the head is a
white mark resembling the letter Y
upside down.
