| ENTHUSIASTIC MEETING
' OVER TWO-HUNDRED COTTON
MEN GATHER AT COURT
HOUSE
I .
| New Members Added To Growing
List of American Cotton Association?Organize
Is The Keynote
The most enthusiastic gathering of
cotton growers, business anil profesj
sionul men that has tal.cn place in
Chesterfield in some time was held
at the court house last Tuesday morning.
The meeting was held ir. the interest
of organization jof the local
branch of the South C arolina Cotton
Association, which in turn is a
branch of the American Cotton Association.
More than two-hundred icprescntative
men of the county were present
and showed much interest in the
proceedings. At the conclusion of
the meeting twenty new members
were enrolled and application blanks
wese asked for by many more.
Mr. W. J. Tiller was made chairman
of the mCctinj* and made a
brief speech in which he outlined tinobject
of the meeting and laid much
stress upon the necessity of organization.
.Mr. S. N. Evans who had charge
of the organization department delivered
a very interesting address in
which he ur^ed upon his hearers the
need of immediate organization to
protect the cotton farmer from the
various organizations other than the
farmer who makes more money out
of cotton than the man whn produces
it.
Mr. .1. W. Sheciy, of Lexington,
was the next speaker and In- also
urrfed the necessity of organization.
I lis talk was of the heart to heart
kind, Mr. Shoely heir.,* a fanner and
cotton grower, lie classed the farmer
as a poor business man; a speculator
in guano, saying that the cotton
raiser bought a quantity of fertilizer
' and took chances on laming enough
cotton to pay for it. Some years Inwon
and some he lost.
"Hut not so with the speculator in
cotton. He wins every year."
Mr. Shoely explained the workings
of the "Warehouse system and the licensed
grader, showing that the far,
nier with these two facilities
can keep his cotton in the waiehouse
and have the use of the money it is
worth to carry him until it will bring
, a price that will juti.'y a man in raisng
it. He was on entertaining speak,
er and illustrated some of his points
with anmedotes llmi | rodueed much
laughter.
Hon. (J. K. Laney closed tin speaking
with an earnest appeal to his fellow
eotton farmers to organize, in
plain words to join tin- association
' and thereby ecu re .ill tin- aOvantges
of the warehouse and grader. Mr.
1 I.aiu-y pointed out the fact that many
who were within hearing had sold
' their cotton last fall for 27 to 21)
rents when today the same grade is
, bringing over 10 cts. These men had
|fto sell last fall in order t> meet obI
ligations. Had a government ware
nouMo been available tney would not
have had to sell, but could have stor
( il their cotton, borrowed all the
money they needed < n their warehouse
receipts and held the cotton
for better prices.
Mr. haney closed with a reiterated
appeal for members of the organisation.

It all came ahout thmugh Mi. I'arnell

there were some good players in
Charlotte who were disengaged. lie
went to engage some of them for the
local club.
lie got in t<iuch with some of the
disengaged players ami talked business.
to them. Word went around
annum the players that a promoter
was in town. They wanted to see him.
lie saw them. Some of those who
talked to Mr. Meehan may have been
under contract to '.he Charlotte team
or the South Atlantic' I.eagui. If so
Mr. Meehan did not know it.
Now the Charlotte ( !uh and the
South Atlantic League have for some
reason had mighty hard luck this
season in keeping their players satislied.
In faet both complain tin;' they
have been all but put. out nf business

and joining "outlaw" club:;. In fact
at.the time of Mr. Median's appearance
the magnates and the fans were
suffering from incipient nervous prostration
over the desertion of one of
their star players, who had down to a
more lucretive job on a Philadelphia
team.
So when it became known that a
promoter was busy in their midst indignation
ran birth. V iolcnc* was
talked of but ipiie'.or heads prevailed
and the legal dep*i''tm mt was consulted.
It was discovered that (Charlotte
has upon her statute hooks a
law requiring persons fvoqj outside
