! COAST TO COAST
IN THIRTEEN DAYS
A new world's record of 13 dnys,
fivu hours for the 8,500 mile trans'
continental trip from Los Angeles to
j New York has been made by a pneu
matically equipped motor truck of
I the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company.
| The previous record of 17 days and
three hours was established in 1918
by a light weight Maxwell truck,
i When the three-ton Packard that
| had hung up the new coast-to-coast
! record rolled into New York City, it
. hud traveled from the Atlantic to the
! Pacific four times since 1918 and rolled
a total of 180,000 miles.
1 Driven by Howard Sholder and'
Herbert Temple, the big freighter I
traveled" 2,000 miles over the Santa'
Fe route to Kansas City in eight days
| and 13 hours despite 32 hours lost
| because of bad roads and detours in
j New Mexico.
I Just 12days after leaving Los An:
geles, the big truck rolled into the
factories at Akron?-a distance of j
2,900 miles. Tho drivers relieved each
ot her every six hours, one sleeninir
in a comfortable cab behind the driver's
scat, while the other maintained
the schedule.*
, The truck made its first transconti|
nontul run from Boston to San Fran!
cisco in September 10'8?3.700 miles
I in 'J 1 days. The same truck traveled
! with an army transport train over
the Lincoln Highway in 1019 and
since then has been Riving demonstrations
along the Pacific coast.
Company officials believe that the
new record, with its average daily run
I of 250 miles, will stand for some
time.
