THE DARK HORSE
I
In the presidential election of 1S40
le Democrats ran Mnrtin Van Burcn
gainst William Henry Harrison,
rhig candidate. A hot campaign folwed.
Harrison had lived in log eabs
and was liberal with hard cider,
i his boosters erected log cabins ali ,
/er the country and made much j'
andal by "the terrible amount of
ird cider drunk at the political
eelings in them."
Harrison was elected ami the bitr
political tight died off in a nationlaugh
at the one vote received in

lk, aspirant for the vice presidents.
Four years later at the Democratic
invention in Philadelphia, Van Burn
had a majority on the first ballot. <
majority of two-thirds beni^ nec?sary
to nominate, his name was <
ithdrawn after the eighth ballot. Out
otted Polk, the first American presiential
Dark Horse, and the ninth
r?te was unanimous for him. He was
eetcd pre ident.
The Democratic convenlion in Palmore,
1832, trot deadlocked. After
3 balloting-', in came Dark Horse
ranklin Pierce. The forty-ninth Lillet
unanimously made him candidate,
le became president, defeating (Jenral
Scott and carrying ail but four
.ates.

'ilden's 4,284,205, and Tilden had a
mjority of 157,1197 votes over his
ombincd opposition. But in the Elecirial
College Hayes had 185 votes
gainst Tilden's 184. To settle arguicnt
an Electorial Commission was
rented by special law. It consisted
f five from the Republican Senate,
ve from the Democratic House and
ve from the Supreme Court. Hayes
'on the decision.
In the Republican convention of
800, two-thirds of the delegates
ere pledged for William II. Seward,
ieward was the giant of his party,
ireely was out, hammer and tongs to
ck him. After much balloting the
onvention unanimously endorsed
he greatest of all Dark Horses- Abaham
Lincoln? who wa- then little
nown outside his own state, and in
le east was ridiculed.
In 1880 the Republican National
onvention was in Chicago. The first
allot showed this vote: Grant .",04,
laine 284, Sherman 93, Edmunds .>4,
/ashburne 30, Windom 10. A feroious
political light butst forth. On
le thirty-sixth and final ballot. Dark
lorse Garfield of Ohio won JtM)
r?tos and was nominated.
l>y curious coincidence the Rcpuhcans
will soon hold anotiier national
invention in Chicago with eandiates
lined up about as they were in
880. The specter of the Garfield
uminntion haunts the air and the
aija board says that Johnson, Wood
nd company are spending uneasy
i trills. I'ive times a convention dcadck
