"SOCK" PARTY WAS
A BIG SUCCESS
The "sock" party given by the Ladies
of the Presbyterian Church at
the High School Auditorium last
week proved a very successful undertaking.
The entertainment was well
attended and about $300 was added
to the building fund thereby. Excellent
entertainment and refreshments
were provided. Among those minning
prizes were Miss Alise Britton, who
was voted the prettiest girl present.
Mr. Henry Douglass, by dint of considerable
electioneering and unususual
.pen u.-.3ive power succeeded
in gaming the distinction over all opponents
as being the unhandsomest
man. Miss Serena Evans carried off
the first prize in the foot identifying
contest.
FLORENCE DISTRICT
SUNDAY SCHOOL MEETING
The Florence District Sunday
School Conference was held last
Thursday and Friday, with Bethlehem
church of the Bethlehem and New
Market charge.
This was by far the best Sunday
School Conference that I have ever
attended; more than 200 were enrolled
and a very fine program was
carried out. Field Secretary J E.
Ford was present and made a very
interesting addresses on grading,
equipping and organizing the Sunday
school. Bro. Ford was very fortunate
in securing for this session Mrs.
W. L. Cams, who made several very
interesting addresses on Sunday
school work.
Other addresser were made by the
following preachers: Rev. F. H. Shuler,
Rev. J. A. Campbell, Rev. M. L.
Banks, Rev. W. R. Phillips and Rev.
: G. A. Teasley, also by A. J. A. Pcrritt
and J. M. Lynch, laymen.
Chesterfield Circuit and East Chesterfield
were represented at this conference
by the pastors of each charge
and Bro. C. P. Mangum, Bro. Lewis
and the Misses Lewis and Lucas, of
Chesterfield, and Bro. I. It. Melton,
of Friendship.
By a large majority the Confer
ence voted to hold its next session at
Shiloh, of the Chesterfield Circuit.
I All who atetnded the conference
: seemed to enjoy the addresses and
the entertainment received at the
hands of those good people of Bethlehem,
and I feel sure all feel benefitted.
Now just a word about this church
of which many do not know. Bethlehem
is a large country church with
eight Sunday school rooms in one of
the best sections of Darlington county.
This church with one other make
up what is now Bethlehem and New
Market charge, just two country
' churches, paying a salary of $1,800.
Their Sunday school has an enroll,
ment of 22a with an average attendance
of about 175. The pastor, the
Rev. G. L. Jngraham, is doing a good
work o nthis charge and is much beloved
by his people.
Just before adjournment Friday
Rev. M. L. Banks offered resolutions
of thanks to the good people for their
hospitality to the delegates, which
' was adopted by the conference.
a nounteous dinner was served or
the grounds which was enjoyed b>

A GOOD MAN GONE
On the 23d of April, 1920, Deacon
Albert Eddins, in the G-lth year of his
ape, departed to his home above. On
the 24th the funeral services were
held in the presence of a great host
of people assembled in Pine Grove
church, and his body was laid to rest
in the church cemetery.
Brother Eddins was stricken with
paralysis about seven years ago,
from which he never recovered. His
faithful wife and children stood by
and watched over him day and nipht
from the beginning of his illness until
the end came.
Durinp all these years of suflferinp
he did not murmur or complain. He
leaves behind hirn a wife, four sons,
three dauphters and his mother, also
five sisters and one brother and
many other relatives, and a preat
host of friends. But I would say to
them all, "Sorrow not as those who
1 live no hope," for he was ready,
waiting and watching for his Redeemer.
"How blest the righteous when he
dies,
When sinks the weary soul to rest."
He told me and others many times
before he lost the power of speech
that he was ready. He was a son of
Rev. A. J. Eddins, one of the pioneer
Baptist preachers of this county. He
was one of the charter members of
Pine Grove church, a deacon and
leader in his church. True and faithful
in his home; true and faithful as
a friend and neighbor; a useful man
to Chesterfield county, and he will be
greatly missed by us all. To the bereaved
family I desire to express my
heartfelt sympathy and my prayer to
God i:> that Jesus, our Savior may bo
much with you all during these sad,
dark lonely hours.
J. II. Hildreth, Pastor.
