CHESTERFIELD'S NEEDS j
Nature has been kind to Chester- j
field. Our climate is about ilie same ;
as that of Aiken ami South' rn Pines, I
for tin enjoyment of which tourists |
travel many miles and spent! many |
dollars. Our a'litude is ideal, our rial- i
ural drainage per feet. We are the *
hub of a line agricultural community. J
All this nature has done for us. Hut J
as a community we have done mighty I
little for otirsel\es. With the excep- |
tion of ej 'cirie lights we are without t
a singi modern convenience. We are g
without suliicie: t housing r.ecomoda- ,
tions. We are without any sort of ho- ^
tel accomodation. We hive no streets. \
All of these tilings Chesterfield I
needs and must have if she keeps f
pace with civilization. |
Our people are becoming alive to j
the fact that we are no longer a vil- j
lage, that we are a thriving business :
center and as such mu t of necessity !
expand or go backward. Of late we
have gone backward. We have not {
kept even with our lire losses. Our s
buildings burn faster than we build ^
them. !
There is a movement on foot,
which, if carried to a successful is ue ;
will result in the town having a sys- J
tern of waterworks and sewerage. J
This, is as it should be, the first slep. *
Without the protection of water peo
pie will not build houses. Without the i
convenience and health protection of
sewerage people who have h< mi u ed )
to such things will no; come !">om oth- f
er places and locate among us. Wat- j
erworks and sewerage arc m? longer j
considered hr uric . hut are absolute f
necessities. The movement bar start- ^
ed and it mils' . d if Chesterfield :
is to I.< ru; : a nod in which, to ' ;
live. j |

are all around us. But there are no )
streets by which m pot to them. How i

LEAGUE OF NATIONS KILLED 3
The Leapiic of Nations I'eace Pact I
has been killed and, so far as the Sen- |
ate is concerned, is a dead issue. The j
Republican majority failing in the at- j
tempt to pas the ratitication measure L
as they had amended it, wranpled ?
to the last, tryinp every means in !
their power to put through a Peace }
Treaty as weak as skimmed milk in j
June. The Democratic minority j
stood for a real document or nothing. |
They pot iiotiiiup, but have the sat-J
isfaction of kuowinp that the Repub- i !
licans pot no more than they. The | I
Leapuc of Nations will probably cut i t
some figure in next Kail's election; I
but it is a much too involved matter |
to make good political material. Too .
much explanation will he necessary i
and it will be too diilicult to ta! e the , *
average voter through tie- intricacies: I
of the various interpretation, of the! I
| *
different articles, clauses and prolo- I
cols. For a political i sic something ?
is needed that the voter may declare i
himself, or herself, "for it or agin' :
it." The League document is rather f
complicated to he treated so simply. I
Anyway, the American people have
heard and read so much for trie last
four months and have learned <> lit
tie of the matter that it is likely thai j
they would prefer to turn thiir en- j
thusiasm to some other subject.
SAFELY STOWED
It was in I'aris. 'lie- talkative
guide was exhibiting to the .r/e rested j r<
American tourist the tomb of Kapo-|tl
leon with all the en tomary flourish- ' ,
es of both language and hands.
"This immense sarcophagus," exclaimed
the guide, "weighs forty |>
tons. Inside of that, sir, i a steel
receptacle weighing tweKe ton , and ,,f
inside of that is a l< aden la-*, her- tl.
metically sealed, weighing over two ();1
tons. Inside of that rests a mahog- s.t
ny coffin contuing the remains of r):i
a very great inan."
For a moment the American was
silent, na if in deep meditation. Then _
he said. F<
"It seems to me that you've (jot
him all right. If he ever gets out, j
cable ma at my expense." J
