UCCESS WITH DAIRY CATTLE IN SOUTH CAROLINA Clemson College, February 9.?For ie past five years large numbers of ur South Carolina farmers have been uying registered dairy cattle of the ersey, Guernsey, and Holstein reeds from farmers in the North, lome of our farmers, after paying orthern breeders high prices for hese cattle, brought them home and reated them as they were accustomd to treat their native cattle, with tie result that the cattle did not prouee as they had expected, and they rere naturally very much disappointd with them. Lately a great many omplaints have been coming into the >airy Division from farmers who are nder the impression that pure-bred attle do not do well under South Carolina conditions. In nearly every ease the real fault ack of the complaints, says I'rof, W. V. Fitzpatrick, of the Dairy Division, es with the owners of the cows and ot with the cows. The remedy conists in giving the cows us nearly as ossible conditions comparable with le feeds, methods of handling, etc., ractised by their former owners. W ia .. ? I t? ..... to Miiifnjr piuvt'd uy inu mcreasig number of farmers and dairymen bo have brought cattle into the tate and given them suitable feeds ml shelter and intelligent eare and :?ve been rewarded by having the limals exceed their expectations for ilk and butter production. There are rapidly developing in this Late two classes of owners of pure ed dairy cattle: those who own pure red cattle who do not make any * fort to breed them better, advertise lem or improve them; and those ho know they have good cattle and e using the best pure-bred hulls huh they can obtain so that each neration is superior to the parits, and who also practice methods feeding, testing and care which dedops the best in the animals. To e latter class the name breeders is operly given. '.i is the only class which South Carolina farmers ould permit hemselves to belong.
