AUTOMOBILE THIEVES
On last Friday afternoon a Ford ,
car belongng to Mr. H. C. Wilhelm, i
of Middendorf, was stolen from the J
parking field outside the fair 1
grounds. (
Mr. Wilhelm promptly reported the <
theft to the local authorities and the (
Carolinas Automotive Dealers Asso- |
ciation. Every effort to And any 1
trace of the car or the thieves was '
unavailing Friday night and Satur- 1
dayOn
Sunday morning a negro far. '
mer found the machine stuck in deep
sand on one of the roads back of Ru- 4
by. The South Carolina number had
been changed to one from Ohio. The f
radiator was dry and the rubber tube '
leading from the pump to the cooling
system was melted off, showing thut 8
the thieves had made desperate at- 8
tempts to get out of the sand before '
abandoning the car.
The thieves were evidently prnfes
sionals, but they failed to reckon with *
the Chesterfield County roads. Mr. ^
Wilhelm believes in good roads, but
admits that there is some truth in the t
. old saw about it being an ill wind that r
' blows no good. *

LOSES HOME BY FIRE '
Within the past week Chesterfield
has had four fire alarms. Two
were discovered in time to be
controlled by the primitive methods
employtd here, but one had gained tl
enough headway to render the buck- jj
et brigade useless. , s
On Wednesday morning the home
of Mr. Lonnie Douglass, on Scotch
Road, was completely destroyed by a ^
fire that started from a defective tl
I chimney. As the fir? had gained
some start when discovered by Mrs. y
Douglass there was nothing to do but p
to save some of the contents of the j
house. A good part of the furniture, e.
bed clothing and wearing apparel
were destroyed. Mr. Douglass' loss ai
is estimated at about $4,000. There 0,
was $1,000 insurance. n

barber shop of S. M. Wingate at 11 e,
o'clock at night. The discovery was e
timely, as a few minutes delay would ^
have allowed the blaze to gain such jj
headway as to become beyond con- c,
trol. As it was the hastily organized
bucket brigade succeeded in putting
out the flames before serious damage
was done. rj
On last Saturday fire was discovered
in some bales of cotton at the C.
&. Station. This was another for- 0
tunate discovery, as the smouldering r.
fire was extinguished before it had
gained enough headway to become j
dangerous. p(
On Thursday morning five hay- et
stucks belonging to Hon. G. K. Laney cj
were destroyed by fire. st

AVIATOR MERRILL TRIED

s When Aviator Merrill was forced

possible effort to (jet his machine ir>

do so as parts had to be supplied
i from Memphis, Tenn. Mr. T. E. Mul;

immediately jjot in touch with F. E,
Younjft of Memphis, who had made
the contract to furnish a flyer for the
fair. Mr. Younjc wired in all directions
for flying men and neither effort
nor expense was spared
in attempting to replace Merrill
and his machine, but
the time was too short, the fair was
over before a flyer could be obtained.
The following letter from Mr.
Younjj to Mr. Mulloy will show the
efforts both were making to provide
an aeronaut for the Chesterfield Fair
patrons:
Memphis, Tenn., Nov. 15, 1919.
Mr. T. E. Mulloy, Secy.,
Chesterfield, S. C.
Hear Mr. Mulloy:
I have your several telegrams to
which I replied as per enclosures. It
is certainly touph that Merrill was
unable to net to you, as I know the

part of the name and it had to happen

I sent Aviator Miller to replace him,
so that when Merrill failed to net to
Chesterfield I had no one to send you,
but thounht I could net a man from
