INTERSITIAL GLAND
OPERATION PERFORMED
IN CALIFORNIA
Word comes from California that
Saturday and on a number of pre
vious occasions operations similiar to
those performed in France by Dr.
Serge Voronoff, have been performed
in San Quentin hospital, by members
the prison medical staff. The operaLion
Saturday involved the grafting
into an old - convict of the inLersitial
gland taken from a
young prisoner sentenced to
leath immediately after his execution.
Such operations have, the
report Htates, resuted in a marked
restoration of mental as well as phylical
strength. It is gratifying to note,
from this report, that the developnent
of the American medical science
s keeping fully abreast with that of
France in this important line of reearch
and experimentation.

SECOND HONORS CO ' '
* TO SOUTH CAROLINIAN
Mineola, N. Y. Oct.'20?South Carolina
captured second honors in the
transcontinental air flight and return
when Capt. J. O. Donaldson, landed
at Roosevelt field at 10:30 today.
Capt. Donaldson, who made the
5,400 mile pourney in a single-seated
S. E.-5 airplane is a native of
Greenville, S. C. He was in Europe
fourteen months as a member of the
American general headquarters
squu^ron and also saw service with
the British army near Dunkifrk.
Capt. Donaldson took part in seven
of the major operations of the
American army, and while flying over
Douia shortly after the Chateau Thierry
drive, was attacked by three
German planes. He brought down
two of them but was captured by the
third later, however, escaping to
Belgium.
GOVERNMENT MAY ACT
IN LONGSHOREMEN STRIKE
The failure of the plans for the settlement
of longshoremen strike at
New York, which has caused the tying
up of a large portion of the
Atlantic shipping, seems likely to
cause vigorous action by the United
States Government.
The first intimation of such action
was furnished by a statement issued
u.. cl:?: n j ?1-2 t
uy me omiipiiiK ouuru in wnicn a
warning was given strikers regarding
Government ships. The statement is
interpreted as intimating that, if the
regular longshoremen refuse to return
to work at wages fixed by the
National Adjustment Commission,
soldiers will be called on to look after
these vessels.
Already a number of steamships in
Government service are being cared
for by the military and apparently
the Government will tolerate no further
delay in the unloading or loading
vesels of this character. The
statement issued by the Shipping
Board reads os follows: "The delay
on the part of the longshoremen on
the Atlantic Coast in abandoning
their work in the unauthorized strike
in violation of their agreement to
abide by the awards of the National
Adjustment Commission, makes it necessary
for the United States Shipping
Board to give immediate consideration
to the working of the ships
under its control. This delay is resulting
in great inconvience to the
public and is a serious interruption
in the operation of the merchant marine
and is an appalling and economic
waste. This is a condition that cannot
be permitted to continue .nd a
remedy must be found at once to sustain
these awards and carry on the
business in the country."

A LONG FELT WANT
If anything came to fill a longfelt
want it is the cotton picker
recently a|inouncpd. Ifi f\ cotton
picker can appear that will do the
work and one will come some day,
it will have the world at its feet as
completely as the gin has. There is
the weakest spot about the cotton
production, and the growing necessities
of humanity make the cotton
picker the most desired new invenvention
ahead of the mechanical intelligence
of the country. Handpicking
is too slow for this age.?
