' CONFEDERATE VETERANS
;| GREET AMERICAN LEGION
I When the United Confederate Veterans
gathered from all parts of the
South and many of the North to hold
^ their annual convention in Atlanta
t last week, they received a message
r of j;ood wishes from the New York
l> headquarters of the American Le^ion^
i the newly organized World War Vet
crans. Appreciating the spirit of the
young veterans the older society have
sent the following message:
i Atlanta Ga., October 9, 1919.
I "The United Confederate Veterans

- GROWTH OF THE HOG
INDUSTRY IN THE SOUTH
II
e Some idea of the rapid growth of
r ' the hog industry in the South may be
j obtained by a comparison of shipments
of hogs from the state of Mississippi
in 1914 and 1919.
The chief market point for Mississippi
is the National Stock Yards, 111.,
'' (St. Louis Market). During the env
tire year hf 1914 the state of Missis-'
1 | sippi shipped less than K,000 hogs to
s the St. Louis market, where as dur
ing the first six months of 1919 the
s shipments of hogs to this same maket
s amounted to 1.'17,000.
It is possible that Mississippi has
" increased her hog production more
1 rapidly than some others of the
^ Southern states, hut some of them
have no doubt done as well, and the
above figures may he taken as a pret'
ty good index of the growth of hog
2 shipments from the South during the
s past five years.?The Progressive

LAND AVAILABLE
FOR SERVICE MEN
In response to a resolution adopted
last session, Secretary Lane has
transmitted to Congress a report covering
a special invistigation hade b?
the Department of the Interior into
the development of unused lunds and
giving in detail possible projects
available throughout the country.
While lack of funds limited the
report's scope, Secretary Lane informed
Congress that the investigation
has demonstarted that in most
states are "great bodies of unused
lands, which, with drainage or clearing,
can be made available at a comparatively
small cost for farms."

"The work" Secretary Lane added,
"has been carried on inthe prospect
that Congress would see fit to give
our returned soldiers and sailors an
opportunity to go upon these lands
under proper guidance and convert
them into home farms for themselves,
It is a work that must in my opinion
be undertaken soon if we are to maintain
our position as a self-supporting
people.
"If the objection is raised that the
federal finunces will not support the
drain proposed, I beg to advise that
there will be no difficulty in selling
$500,000,000 in government 3% per
cent non-taxable bonds, which would
be sufficient to cover the expedenture
contemplated in the Smoot-Mondell
bill."

To let the (liver run,

It's easy saying, "Let her go!"
Disdainful of mistakes?
The clever part ?s going slow
And putting on the brakes.
It's easy putting forth a boast
With a self-elation glee,
While ardent fancies gayly coast
From serious caution free.
All plans some obstacles must know,
And progress never makes
A showing save with those who know
Just when to use the brakes!
