Washington Sept. 22?Retail prices!

as compared with July and
reuched the highest point in the nation's
history, despite the government's
campaign to reduce the cost of
living. A

when the department of labor's
bureau of the labor satisfies made

The foodstuffs increasing in price

for sirloin and round steak, rib
and chuck roasts, onions bacon, flour,
cabbage and canned peas, corn, beans

ASHEV1LLE GOING DRY
Th water supply at Asheville, N.
C., is failing. When the resevoir
was estimated to contain but 2,500,000,
gallons the autorities ordered
all laundries and soda fountains
closed until such a time as rains
shall have replenished the drinking
supply.
Will Bethune, colored, who killed
a white man in 1909, has begun serving
a life sentence at Columbia, after
having numerous trials. He was
several times sentenced to death by
the gallows and by electrocution.

FREIGHT CARS
The Railroad Administration has
called attention to the serious shortage
of freight cars all over the country.
In spite of the fact that 900 new
cars are being turned out and delivered
every day, there is so much shipping
that the present equiptment falls
short of the demands. Reviving business
throughout the land, together
with the" extensive road building, unusually
heavy grain and coal movements
and the shipment of cotton in
the South are the causes of an unusual
demand. Shippers and receivers
everywhere are asked to help things
along by loading and unloading cars
as rapidly as posible, so that they may
be hurried along instead of "loafing"
on side tracks.

NEWS FROM FRIENDSHIP
i On September 19, after an illness
of five week*, DeVois Thurman
Adams, infant son of Mr. and Mrs.
D. M. Adams, passed away. The bereaved
parents have the smpathy of
the entire community in their great
sorrow. The burial was in the Morven
Cemetery.
The news has reached here of the
^leath in Anson County, N. C., of Mrs.
Eliza Tucker, mother of Mrs. R. A.
Melton. Mrs. Tucker had been ill
for several weeks.
Mrs. L. W. Gaddy, of Cason- Oldfield,
was the guest'of Mrs. J. F. Gaddy
Sunday.
There will be preaching here next
Sunday at 12 o'clock, fast time; Sunday
School at 11 fast time.

DEATH LIST NEARS 400
At Corpus Christi, Texas, bodies of
victims of the recent storm are
still being found. The storm line is
so strewn with wreckage that the
search for bodies under it has been
very tedious. Three hundred and "
ninety bodies hud been recovered
last Monday. It is now etsimated t
that the total death list will reach (

States have sent large shipments of
food and clothing for the relief of '
