News of the desth of Miss Mattie J Sellers reached here on Friday morninert Jan. 24th, from Columbia, where J she was taking a business course. I She was taken very ill one week before her death and her condition was serious at the first. Death came suddenly and was a painful Hhock to many relatives and friends in Ruby and the surrounding territory. ,n She had been tenderly nursed by devoted parents and kind friends, but human skill could not save her as thc Master had said "Come," and we mourn not at His will. Dear Mattie will be greatly missed in her home and commuinty. It is to very hard to give up our loved ones, dt W1 but we know she is with the angels. | She was laid to rest in the quiet ? graveyard at Elizabeth Baptist 8l church and loving hands struwed her ( grave with flowers. We do not think te of her as dead, but as gone to a ca better land. Mattie had visited her parents te Christmas and was then in perfect be ... mi health. Al To the bereaved mother, father, ov sister and brother we tender Chris ,u tian condolence, and pray that they w) and all those whom she has led in ng songs on earth may meet and sing ^ with her the glad new song of 10- *r demption around the throne of <1(1(1. ^ We believe that Mattie is "Marching aa in the light" of the Savior's love. nj We miss her dear face, kind word ; tli and sweet disposition, but we hope to du meet her again when we too have K* crossed over the river of death. How to Quard Against Pneumonia. Common Colde Highly Catching?Importance of 8ultable Clothing?Could Save 100,000 Live*. Washington, D. C.?With the suhsldice of the epidemic of Influenza the tention of henlth officers Is directed pneumoola, bronchitis and other senses of the respiratory system tilch regularly cause a large number deaths, especially during the winter ason. According to Itupert Hlue, irgeon General of the United States jbllc Health Service, these diseases 111 be especially prevalent this winr unless the people are particularly reful to obey health Instructions. "The present epidemic," said Surou General Hlue, "has taught by bitr experience how readily a condition ginning apparently as a slight cold ay go on to pneumonia and death, though the worst of the epidemic 1* er, there will contlnuo to be a largo imber of scuttered cases, many of era mild and unrecognized, which 111 ho danger spots to be guarded ;alnaL" Tho Surgeon General likened e present situation to that after a eat fire, saying, "No Are chief who iderstands his business stops playing ? hot? on the clmrred debris as soon i the flames and visible flru have <11? peared. On the contrary, he con- \ iues the water for hours and even iys, for he knows that there la dnn(r of the flro rekindling from smol ring embers." | "Then you fear another outbreak of flueuzu?" he was aaked. "Not neces- | rlly another large epidemic," nnld ( e aurgoon General, "but unless the K>ple learn to reullze the seriousness ' the danger they will he compelled to j ty a heavy death toll from pncumo- ' a and other respiratory diseases. Common Colds Highly Catching. "It Is encouraging to observe that K)ple ure beginning to learn that ornary coughs and colds are highly itching and ure spread from person person by means of droplets of tiu laden mucus. Such droplets are irayed Into the air when cureless or norant people cough or sneeze withit covering their mouth and nose. It nlso good to know that people have irned something about the value of esh air. In summer, when people e largely out of doors, the resplrary diseases (coughs, colds, pneuwoa, etc.) are Infrequent; In the fall, people begin to remain Indoors, tho Bplratory diseases Increase; lu the nter, when people are prone to stay badly ventilated, overheated rooms, e resplrutory diseases become very evalent. Sultablo Clothing Important. "8tlll another factor In the produo >n of colds, pneumonia and other roIratory diseases is carelessness or lgtrance of the people regarding suitde clothing during the seasons when e weather suddenly changes, sitting warm rooms too heavily dressed or, lat Is even more common, especially long women, dressing so lightly that ndows are kept closed In order to he infortably warui. This Is a very lurlous practice. Could 8avo 100,000 Live*.
