Wright 15.00 HAVE TO BE BROKEN IN It might be said of the late Senator Tillman that he went to the Senate to scoff and remained to pray. The Senate undoubtedly exercises that sort of influence over most men who remain in it any length of time. It softens and mellows. Tillman came champing in from South Carolina a [ quarter of a century ago with a "pitchfork" reputation, a Hotspur of the South breathing lire. He died one of the gentlest of Senators, a devotee of precedent and seniority. The Senate has a way of making Senators conform. When they do they find it a very pleasant club, but until they do the going can be made very uneven for them. Most Senators decide after a little to go along. They can accomplish most that way with the most personal satisfaction. In conforming they sometimes find themselves changed from radicals to conservatives, and perhaps are a lit tie surprised at it, hut its a natural transformation. It is helped along by age and sedentary habits. GKRMAN FEARS OF FAILURE # Geneva, duly IK. The newspaper Democrat!', which is usually well informed upon German affairs, declares that the latest, information from across the Rhine shows mixed feelings in Germany regarding the new offensive. While there is hope of victory and an early peace, there arc also secret fears of failure, which are only whispered, the advices assert.
