M iss Margaret Griggs entertained quite a number of her friends at her home on Green street last Thursday. The occasion was a birthday. Miss Margaret being an Independence Day girl. The Fourth of July celebrations at Pageland closed with a tiagedy when I.ige Smith shot anil killed Baxter Doster, both of whom are colored. Hard feelings of long standing and liquor of a later brew are said to have caused the shooting. I.ige surrendered to Policeman Gregory. "The Bachelor's Elopement" Riven last Tuesday night by the Vt. Croghan Theatrical Company, was a delightful affair. Only a small crowd attended however. This play should play a return engagement and give Chesterfield another chance to turn out. RUBY Messrs. R. I). McCreight and Dun can McGregor have gone to Cincin natti, Ohio, on a business .and vacation trip. Miss Rogers, of Cheraw, has been the guest of her aunt, Mrs. J. C. Huntley, Sr., for the past week. Mrs. J. C. Lindsay and little daughter, of St. Paul, N. C., are visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs D. II. McGregor. Misses Mollie and Marie Newsom, <jf Hartsville, are visiting their brother, Dr. R. M. Xewsom, here. .Miss Kuth Hurst, of Chesterfield spent the week-end with her sister, Mrs. It. M. Newsom. She was accompanied home by Miss Mollie Newsom. Mr. Carl Gibson has gone to Columbia to take up his work in the NVaverly Drug Co. Misses Alice and Bessie Burch are visiting relatives in Wadesboro. Messrs. T.H.Burch and Fred Edgeworth, motored to Ashville, N. last week. The "Mt. Croghan Amateur Thea-I trical Company," will present a play | here Thursday evening, July II. It is in .'5 acts, and is entiltded, "The Bachelor's Elopement." Half the proceeds go to the local Ited Cross. Everybody come! Ruby had a really "Glorious Fourth" in the shape of a street carnival held for the Red Cross. There were shows and "eating stands" in plenty. The Minstrel Show and the ice cream booth were; the centers of attraction. Many, however, saw the "Overgrown Baby," Two-Headed Woman," etc. They also had their fortunes told by the charming palmist. Everybody enjoyed a good time and the Red Cross made $17,150, clear. The local Boy Scout Troop has been notified by the government to locate all the black walnut trees over 12 inches in diameter. Black wal is used for o'-roplane propellers and gun stocks. Anyone having any sir h tree or trees will please notify Scoutmaster, Rev. J. R. Millard, or Patrol lander, James K. Millard. Private Kd. Hancock, of the 316th Field Artillery, Camp Jackson, spent Sunday at home. Miss Marjorie lluntley is visiting relatives an<f friends in Cheraw. Mr. M. L. The delay in issuing The Advertiser this week was unavoidable. The gas engine which pulls the newspaper press broke a gear and could not be mended in time for Thursday's mail. Some 1,200 colored folks celebrated the glorious Fourth by an all-day picnic and talk-feast at the Courthouse. There were five good speeches made on the subject of {pod conservation. A brass band enlivened th-; occasion. All in all it was a big day. The following fiishermen are down at Little Itiver studying up a fine lot of yarns to spin when they return: Messrs. II. M.
