There was a big crowd present and the proceeds amounted to forty-five dollars. The following folks visited in Hartsville the past week: Mr. E. R. Mrs. John Middleton is again at home, and we are glad to say greatly improved, after a stay of several weeks in the Columbia Hospital. Mr. Wesley Catoe, of Camp Jackson spent the past week-end with his parents. Mrs. Lula Hough is visiting relatives in Rock Hill. CROGHAN COUNCIL OF DEFENSE | The food production campaign is now on in Chesterfield County. We publish herewith a list of a number of the speaking engagements. The people of their respective communities are urged to attend these meeting. Senator George K. Laney will be the principal speaker at Patrick tomorrow night. Mr. W. R. Elliott, District Farm Demonstration Agent, will be in the County Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and will attend the meetings scheduled for those days. The principal address at the meeting at Chesterfield Saturday 23d, wiTl be delivered by Hon. Jno. L. McLaurin, of Bcnnettsville, who is one of the largest farmers in the State of South Carolina. Food production campaigns are being carried on in Jefferson, Alligator and Pee Dee townships at this time and we regret that we have not been able to obtain a list of the various meetings for publication. JOE 2 ' ' / < If there should be an error in your I 4 ? i ? ? ?? P MRS. MARY JOHNSON Mrs. Mary Johnson, of near Ruby, died last Wednesday and was buried Thursday at Cross Roads cemetery. The Rev. A. B. Smith conducted the funeral service. Mrs. Johnson was a daughter of Mr. und Mrs. J. J. Purvis, both of whom died some years ago. She married Mr. (iriffeth Johnson, of Hartsville, S. C., and after four years of companionship Mr. Johnson died leaving her with one child. She then made her home with her brother, Rev. J. D. Purvis, of Ruby, where she stayed until her death. Mrs. Johnson was 47 years of age and a member of Cross Roads Baptist church. She joined the church in early life and had lived a consistent Christian life ever since and was always faithful to her Christian duties. She leaves one daughter, j?t seven sisters and two brothers and a host of friends to mourn her death. Ep uk. j. a. tUBANKS I Dr. J. B. Eubanks, one of the best- j known physician in the county, died Hi at his home near Pageland ja8t Saturday. The funeral services were conducted at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon by the Rev. D. L. Preslar, assisted by the Rev. B. S. Funderburg. The Masonic order conducted the burial. The presence at the obsequies of a great concourse of people attested the love and esteem in which Dr. Eubanks was^held by the people.
