CAUGHT IN THE ACT
"The best laid schemes of mice and
men gang aft aglee," said Bobby
Burns. There 'is a fine illustration
of this in the recent disclosures of
the contemptible conduct of the German
minister at Buenos Ayres, Count
Luxburg. This Smart Aleck had the
Swedish legation to send his (Luxburl's)
dispatches as if they were
harmless messages, to their own government,
but to be delivered to the
German representative. The secret
agents of the United States government
discovered the fraud.
Luxburg advised his superiors at
Berlin to promise the Argentine government
that German submarines
would not sink Argentine merchantmen,
but at the same time he suggested
that they send secret instructions
to submarine commanders to
siiik muse vessei-s \uumui leaving a
trace behind"?that is, to sink them
and all on board?to commit murder
on the high seas.
After the disclosure was made that
Count Luxburg was using Argentina
as a catspaw to pull Germany's
chestnuts out of the tire, the count
was virtually kicked out of Buenos
Ayres and Argentina has declared
war on Germany, thus adding one
more country to the list of Germany's
enemies.
The kaiser and his court knew what
was going on, knew that I.uxhurg
was deceiving Argentina and deceiving
Sweden, and they can only
blame him for being found out.
MURDERING THE INNOCENTS
The cruel treatment of the Belgian
women and children by Germany
it was generally supposed had
reached the limit of devilish malice
but read this from the battlefield in
France:
"German airmen, flying by night
over a French town near Ithcims recently
dropped poisoned candoy, causing
the death of many children who
ate it, according to a letter from
Brownlee Bensel Gauld, a former
Harvard University student who is
now driving an ambulance on the
western battle front. The communication
was made public recently to
his father, Rev. F. .J. Gauld, of Toledo,
Ohio."
Herod of old killed children, but
he did not poison them. That was
left for the kaiser and his airmen.
CAMELFLAGE
This is a new word that occur?
quite often in the war news. As it
is the duty of a newspaper to keep
its readers posted along all lines, especially
as to matters concerning the
world war here is the explanation of
its meaning.
One would hardly imagine that
this great contest in which America
is engaged has any other than serious
business in hand. I>ut the American
army is to have camelllago
companies and their main business is
not so much to fight the Germans but
to fool them. In fact the chief of
engineers has issued a call, as recorded
in the Literary Digest, "for in
genious young men v no are looking
for special entertainment in the way
of fooling the Germans."
The idea is to fool the German
airmen and the German soldiers and
sailor.; by making them believe that
a supply train is a row of cottages;
screens painted green are j lac-d or j
top of great guns making them ion!
as if they were part of an innocent
landscape, meadow or hillside. Of
course there has to he some very ar
tistic painting done to secure such
results. The !<!< < of a ship an
painted the color of the sea so that
a submarine is not likely to strike it.
Many such fakes are being successfully
employed to deceive the Iluns.
Texas is a big State hut is afflicted
with a small governor, lie has been
convicted of converting several thousand
dollars of the State money to
his own use.
After October 1st the entire sugar
industry of the United States will laplaced
under government control.
That will not make sugar any sweeter
but it is claimed the price will not
be higher than X cents to the consumer.

THE WONDERS OF SCIENCE
A camera man, working for the
educational department of a film company,
met an old farmer coming out
of a house in the town where he was
working, and explained his presence
in these words:
"I have just been taking some moving
pictures of life out on your farm."
"Did you catch any of my laborers
in motion?" asked the old man
curiously.
"Sure, I did."
The farmer shook his'head reflectively,
then said: "Science is a
wonderful thing."
