UNITED WE STAND
One of the most significant incidents
showing how the North and
South are solidly united in defence of
the government is shown by the action
of Washington and Lee university.
This old Southern university,
that was once presided over by tJenoral
Robert E. Lee, is making most
elaborate preparations for the national
defence. It is stated that 1M) per
cent, of the student body is taking
part in daily military training. Many
other Southern educational institutions
are engaged in daily drilling
nriinnrini' for iho militarv service of
the country.
And then the gathering of the heroes
of the Confederacy in Washington,
the city that half a century agu
they attempted to capture is another
notable indication of the perfect
union and reconciliation of the sections.
ALL HONOR TO THE CHRONICLE
One of the most notable and most
laudable deeds in connection with the
Confederate veterans re-union in
Washington was that of the Augusta
Chronicle. That paper raised
that it turned over to the Augusta
Camp of Confederate Veterans to
pay the expenses to Washington of
over 70 veterans.
Th< >s. W. Loyk >ss, the editor and
one of the principal owners of the
Chronicle, has by this act endeared
himself to the old Confederates and
has proved himself worthy of the
high esteem in which he is universally
held.
