THE SCOUT COLUMN
By Scout Scribe. '
I On January tJth the Boy Scouts
mot as usual, every member beinj?
present. Two new members and the
; one who failed last Friday night 1
i
passed their tenderfoot examinations. (
( This makes two patrols of sixteen tenderfoot
Scouts. Then after we ad
l journcd the Scout Master and his assistant
nave us our regular drill. Af- 'j
' ter pounding the street for about an |
1 hour we had a meeting, the object of
which was to elect patrol leaders and ^
assistants. (
Rudolph Ilursey was appointed ,
Senior Patrol Leader and Thurston ^
Hunley Junior Patrol Leader by the
Scout Master, after much consilium- (
tion, as he said we were all doing well
' f'?r the short lenKth of time we had
heen in training. Then the patrol
I leaders selected their Asistants and
Seouls. The duty of the patrol lead- ,
II evs is to take charge of the front
i iik of their respective patrols and
'' (heir assistants the rear rank of
t'ue same.
The Scout Master is making preparations
to form a patrol in the Pino
drove section and another in the
Hopewell section. The boys of these
n places will meet our Scout Master at
Chesterfield, where he will assist them
in beginning their work.
We are glad t<\ have company.
' I'rof. Wilson, of Ruby, has also organ!1
i: ed a troop of Hoy Scouts. Won't
we have big times this summer? \V?
n wish Scout Master Wilson and his
troop the greatest success.

Mrs. Mary Jane Burch
'Tis true that "In the midst of life
we are in death," but very few seem
- to so thoroughly realize this as did
U the subject of this sketch, Mrs. Mary
t. Jane Burch.
f Mrs. Burch was born April 7. IK Ik
^ and died January ?>, I'd 17. She had
y made an effort for many years to live
v a life that (lod loves. She was prepared
to meet the final call whenever
it should come. Iter life was a beautiful
testimony to the fact that "It is
well with my soul."
I'or many years she had been a
member of the Deep Creek Baptist
.church, where the burial service was
conducted by the Ilcv. 1). A. Brown.
She leaves six sons and two duujth
tors to mourn her death, besides
scores of sympathizing friends. She
will be missed in lu r church and in
: her home, by her children, grand chil
> in n and friends, but there was a vat
fancy in heaven that only Mary Jane
' could till and sis it was (iod's will to
; take her home there is no need to sorrow,
for we know she is enjoying
r everlasting life in heaven,
s Her life- was an example, which if
;\ followed by those who knew her, they

for them to "cross the bar."
