administration is the insurance
bureau under control of the treasury
department. At the time it
was suggested Republican Congressmen
opposed it. Rut it
went through all light and it
proved a big paying investment.
The war insurance bureau has
made a profit of $2,000,000 that
has gone into the treasury of the'
United States. Mr. W. G. McAdoo,
who had much to do in
getting the war insurance started,
is proviug to oe one of the
greatest Secretaries o f the
Treasury and that in time of
great national peril. The builder
of the New York Subway has
shown wonderful capacity in
controlling the finances of the
country through alarming conditions,
avoiding panics, establishing
the reserve hank system,
the naval credit organization and
other plans that have made the
country independent of Wall
street. Instead of having the
money supply concentrated in
the Kastern cities it is placed in
hanks all over the country for
the convenience and use of the
many, not the few and the favorad.
ENORMOUS MEAT PROFITS
They were arguing in Congress
last week about the high
price of beef when it was shown
lhat beefsteak was selling in
Washington City at dS cents per
pound. Cattle were selling at
from $7 to $11 per hundred
)ounds to the beef packers.
These same packers did not lose
i single pound, utilizing hide,
lair, hoof, entrails. It was
diown that while cattle was soling
at low prices the pachers
vero declaring dividends on
.heir capital stock of 50 to 70 per
rant.
The investigation of those
louses and their met.hodsas pro>osed
by Congress is bitterly
opposed by the packers.
While Mr Itorland of Missouri,
t'as discussing the subject, Mr.
jover of South Carolina said :
"Recently in my State two of
he leading small cities are eo

To Our Patrons
The situation in which all
newspapers of the country now
lirnl themselves is precarious, to
say the least. This applies especially
to local papers. The
advance in the cost of every
thing used hy us ranges all the
way from lot) to 100 par cent.,
in some cases more.
We have made no advance in
the price of subscription and
none is contemplated, though
we are planning to make this
paper larger and better than
ever. Our advance in prices on
commercial printing have been
very slight compared with the
cost of material used. A slight
advance in the price of advertising
will be necessary this
fall.
We appeal to our delinquent
subscribers to pay up as quickly
as possible?you are going to pav
| sometime and we need the moil
| ey now.
To the business people we appeal
for a continuance of a liberal
share of your commercial
printing and advertising. We
are getting better equipped every
day to serve you in these
lines and the better your patronage
tiie better we can serve you.
This is in no sense a complaint.
Our business has been as good
as we deserved, but we are putting
our patrons on notice that
we expect to deserve even better
patronage in the future.

A French View Of Wilson
This is a translation, made
for The Advertiser, of the characterization
of President. Wilson
which Professoi Juan Izoulet.
contributed to the Paris weekly
Revue:
Physically and morally, what
sort of man is President Wilson? A
man in his fifties, large and
lean, of a calm audacity,of a sa
gacious mind, and of an obsti-j#
n&te character.
A man of ardent conviction
and of clear vision. And is it ?
not aDpropriate to repeat here ?
the saying of onr Saint Cyran : <
Whence a blaze, thence a light?
A man full of science, who has ?
a great magnetic force 111 "the
purity of his moral vision," for
"his principles are as sound as j
the Ten Commandments." *
Of Scotch-Irish blood.
11 is mother? "One of the
most brilliant and best of wo
man." *(
His father? "A giant with _
the head of a lion, professor of
theology in the Presbyterian
Church." ^
"Those of his parti/.ans," says
his biographer Miss Uosford, t

of character than a thousand '
