With tho average country newspaper it is more important to have something to lill up the editor. WAR SHIPPING INSURANCE A matter about which there has been very little said iu the press but which is a great ~ C A-1 T-v nv.i i n; vtOllOll li Ol II1G Ut'IUOCl'iltlC administration is the insurance bureau under control of the treasury department. At the time it was suggested Republican Congressmen opposed it. Rut it went through all light and it proved a big paying investment. The war insurance bureau has made a profit of $2,000,000 that has gone into the treasury of the' United States. Mr. W. G. McAdoo, who had much to do in getting the war insurance started, is proviug to oe one of the greatest Secretaries o f the Treasury and that in time of great national peril. The builder of the New York Subway has shown wonderful capacity in controlling the finances of the country through alarming conditions, avoiding panics, establishing the reserve hank system, the naval credit organization and other plans that have made the country independent of Wall street. Instead of having the money supply concentrated in the Kastern cities it is placed in hanks all over the country for the convenience and use of the many, not the few and the favorad. ENORMOUS MEAT PROFITS They were arguing in Congress last week about the high price of beef when it was shown lhat beefsteak was selling in Washington City at dS cents per pound. Cattle were selling at from $7 to $11 per hundred )ounds to the beef packers. These same packers did not lose i single pound, utilizing hide, lair, hoof, entrails. It was diown that while cattle was soling at low prices the pachers vero declaring dividends on .heir capital stock of 50 to 70 per rant. The investigation of those louses and their met.hodsas pro>osed by Congress is bitterly opposed by the packers. While Mr Itorland of Missouri, t'as discussing the subject, Mr. jover of South Carolina said : "Recently in my State two of he leading small cities are eo I \t i ??ut im < F/* 1.1 I 11 i>*-1 n? b'li)11s11 small ackint; houses, as it- wen1, on a o-operative orcinniiiiinity basis, 'ersoually I have threat hope for liese two concerns, and I was oiiiK lo ask in gentleman if he nows that any such movement i underway in any other sec- 1 on of the country, or in the /est in the great cattle-growing iiuntr.v?" Mr. Holland replied that he id not know of any that had tnairialized. So in this respect at least outh (Carolina is ale ad of the reat west ir an attempt to cometc with the bit; packing housed. TAXATION. The principle of the Domo-atic revenue bill, recently passI, The New York Times com- 1 lains, is "the same intentional scrimination against wealth l id profits as that embodied in ' le income tax." In selecting men for govern ? enlal service, the principle J lould he to select those who lvo the ability to serve best, i, in selecting men to pay for ivernment, the principle should 5 to select those best able to i.v. This applies especially to local papers. The advance in the cost of every thing used hy us ranges all the way from lot) to 100 par cent., in some cases more. We have made no advance in the price of subscription and none is contemplated, though we are planning to make this paper larger and better than ever. Our advance in prices on commercial printing have been very slight compared with the cost of material used. A slight advance in the price of advertising will be necessary this fall. We appeal to our delinquent subscribers to pay up as quickly as possible?you are going to pav | sometime and we need the moil | ey now. To the business people we appeal for a continuance of a liberal share of your commercial printing and advertising. We are getting better equipped every day to serve you in these lines and the better your patronage tiie better we can serve you. This is in no sense a complaint. Our business has been as good as we deserved, but we are putting our patrons on notice that we expect to deserve even better patronage in the future.
