It shows that for the first six months of this year there were twenty-five lyuchings. Of | these twenty-three were negroes 1 and two were whites. Referring ,j to this statement Mr. Wattersou \ # S ivV S ! j) '"fliat almost one-third of the lynrhings in America in the first half of KH(> occurred in Georgia, where the lynching of hYnnk was permitted through negligence or connivance, and po))ularly endorsed in 1915, is not a surprise. It is an illustration of cause and elicct." It is a sad commentary upon those conditions in < leorgia that newspapers and politicians, with rare exceptions, have not condemned the lynching of a State prisoner who was serving a life sentence in the penitentiary. The tacit approval of ties lyneh3 ing has encouraged outlawry in (leorgia. In one instance an automobile in which there were white men was fired upon and the outlaws exclaimed "we have got lynch law now in (leorgia." Verily the leaven of lynching may leaven a whole State. The Georgia legislature has turned down an anti-lynching bill. - A BRILLIANT YOUNG SOUTH CAROLINIAN The youngest high school prin I - i i i|iai in uiuuuaiue at the Summer School now in progress at tho University of Tennessee, says the Knoxville Sentinel, is Prof. Harris Copenhaver, of the Kdgcfield, South (,'aroliua, High School. The Sentiuel adds that Prof. Copenhaver, who is now only I'd years of age, has the unusal ex perienee of having been placed in charge of a high school the fii >t year he taught, going to Kdgclield imincdiately after his graduation from Carson and Newman college at Jefferson City, where he was valedictorian of his class in lUl.'i. lh* I .I ui ii-ii e.u ucrN uncior nun at | Kdijo.ioid, the most of theia in' in^ men ami women of several I years'experience in tlu: teaching j profi ssion, and all beintf his senior in ago. llut in spite of - his youth and inexperience, L>rof. Cope.nhaver had a most success fu year at Kdgelioid. The total eurollmont was iTiO, a consideral io increase over the previous year. So successful was I'rof. ' Uopenhaver in his work that it was with threat reluctance that the director and patrons of Kdgelield accepted his resignation, permitting him to go to Chapel 11 ill, whore next year he will roe. 'ive his master's degree in the rnivorsity (>f North Carolina. Senator Hoke Smith, ol (ie irgij, has introduced a bill in the Senate to prohibit the transportation by mail of newspapers and circulars, advertising liquors. riU. .. i - i Hsu is meso newspapers and circulars shall not be sent through the mail to dry states - The prohibition laws are nulli lied by this newspaper and circuT lar advertising and it's up to Untde ^am to stop it. The Augusta Chronicle has found one good result of the war. iThat paper says: "On account of the high price of paper, caused by the war, Tom Watson has re duced the Jetlersonian from six jteen to eight pages, After all, war is not without its compensa tions." One of i'he State's able edi torials is headed "Villa Must go." Well he seems to bo going most of the time. Florida has had a lively time trying to elect a governor. Tintwo candidates are Catts and Knotts. One day the report is that Catts is governo-, the nexi ' day he is Knott If we were rot so much op posed to puns we would say thai the gubernational contest in I Florida is very much of a Catts J ' tight.
