SOUTH CAROLINA IN CONGRESS Congressman Kagsdale, of South Carolina, administered a severe and deserved rebuke to Congressman Heating, of Col? - rado, io a recent speech reported iu the Congressional Record While discussing the question of preparedness, the Colorado Congressman felt called upon to reflect upon South Carolina. Mr. Ragsdale road from an article in in the New York Mail in which occured this reference to Colo rado and the chili labor situation. "Colorado is proud of the fact that she produced more sugar beets than any other State in the Union. There is nothing to be proud of in the fact that the little hands of 5,000 children from 7 to 13 years of age helped to produce this wealth. "The work begins with tliinuing the beets as their first growth begins. Children 7 and 8 do this, bending over until their backs must ache excruciatingly. All summer they hoe and weed, and in the autumn help with the harvest, the heaviest work of all Some of the details given by the committee are almost bevond be lief. A girl of 10 is reported to have haudled from 10 to 12 tons of beets in a day." After reading this article Mr. Hagsdale said: "Mr. Chairman, coming from the State of South Carolina, and being somewhat conversant with labor conditions that obtain there, \ give it as my opinion that nowhere within the boundaries of that State are labor conditions anywhere near so bad those described in this article The same day, March 15th, in the Senate, Mr. Ashurst, of Arizoua, paid this high and well deserved compliment to Hon. Ben Tillman. Discussing the manufacture of Armor. Senator Ashurst said: "Mr. President, South Carolina has furnished to llie Union many illustrious men and may well feel proud of her son, Senator Benjamin Ryan Tillman. More than 20 years ago he was urging the passage of a bill providing for the erection of a Government factory for the manufacture of armor plate, and the success which, in my judgment, will ata. i i_ _ _ rr t . ill i. i<enu ins euoris, is an uiuai>ra tion of the fact that an idea which is founded in truth may be crushed for a time, but it will ultimately triumph. It is given to but few men to realize results from their efforts in such great movements as this, aud the chairman of the Committee on Naval Affairs [Mr Tillman] may well congratulate himself that the sentiment of the country is now well-uigh unanimous in favor of Government ownership of factories for the manufacture not only of armor plate, but powder ana arms as well." Congressman Nicholls, of South Carolina, made a speech favoring preparedness. He referred to the battle of Bull Kun, illustrating the necessity of preparedness. "You remember that the society people of the city of Washington, in their carriages rode down to see the race; and you also remember that when the citizen troops met them there, there was a race, and the people in the carriages headed the procession of runners back to Washington." Mr Nicholls was not making a sectional speech but was making a point and poking a little fun at the Northern brothers. It was quite proper for Congressman Sweet to make a speech in favor of taking tarilf off of sugar. It was a very sweet speech. It is not often that a minister quotes poetry to the Lord in a prayer, except in the case of. the Chaplain in Congress. He does this quite often.
