Death to Farmer
Tistol toting and wine drinking
again made a bad conibina- f
tion when a negro, under the in- (
tluence of drink, shot and killed
1 y
a white man, seemingly without
provocation. *
Last Saturday evening Charley *
Campbell, colored, shot and J
killed Lester Hancock, a white
man, at McAllen's place, eight 8
miles from Cheraw on the Nac
tional Highway.
As the story goes, two negroes, .
Charley and Lewis Campbell, \
stopped on Saturday evening at
McAlIen's place and asked for v
wine, it being alleged that McAllen
usually had more or less of ^
this commodity to spare.
i.rr l m *
>v nne mey were being served, | ^
two white men, Lester Hancock v
\
and Olayton Hendrick drove up (
and were invited to get out and
drink. They did so, it is alleged, j
and after being served there was
some discussion as to who should ^
3land the next treat, though s
there was no dispute over the
matter.
Mr. Hancock agreed to treat !
atul then, as the wine was being
drawn, without cause and withnut
warning, so far as is known K
to tiie authorities, Charley f
Campbell drew a revolver and
began shooting, four balls tak- ^
ing effect in the body of Mr.
Hancock. It is further alleged
that as the wounded man was ^
falling, Lewis Campbell etruck
him over the head with a quart
bottle. u
Mr. Hancock was attended by j
Dr. Bull, of Oheraw, who pro ^
nou need the case hopeless. The
patient live;! only a few 11 onr3
after being wounded.
The dying statement of Mr.
llaneock i? in substantial agree
ment with the accounts of the
tragedv given by both McAllen,
wlio Sold the wine, and Clayton 1
Bendrick.
The two Campbell brothers de 1
elare they wen; so drunk they j.
did not know what they were do- (
ing and do not remember the .
i vents of the evening. 1
Word of the tragedy was re- t
ceived by the sherill at 11 p.m., ]
Saturday, and at 1:15 a.m. Sun- j
day, all parties involved were (
under arrest, Messrs. Abbot and
McLanren assisting the sherill'. '
Charley Campbell is in jail, a
charged with murder; Lewis c
Campbell as accessory to the s
murder. Clayton Hendrick is
held under bond as a witness "
and the McAllen negro is under
heavy bond, charged with violating
the excise law and maintaining
a nuisence.

In Serbian Campaign
The interest of the war during
he past week remained with
jperations in and around Serbia,
vhere the Teutons and their Bulgarian
allies are endeavoring to
'orce their way through to their
Turkieh ally.
The race for the road to Conitantinople
has reached an exiting
stage. The Bulgarians are

allies, while the French, in
mall force, have joined the
Serbians.
The French are not yet in sufIciont
numbers to assume an acual
offensive in Macedonia, but
ho rapidity of the Bulgarian adfance
in that region already has
litninished and large detach-:
nents of French and British are1
)eing rushed forward.
Actual junction between the
Bulgarians and their allies will j
ioon show whether the Serbians
.re able to hold their mountain!
loritions until the allies bring!
ip strong forces.
Italy is still hammering away
,t the Austrian front, which is
haken but not broken. It is
xpected that the Italian offensve
will prevent the Austrian*
rom reinforcing their Balkan 1

Russia, by her stubborn de-'
