the fire that- broke out about 1:30
a. m. was Dr. W. G. Singleton, 34,
a native of Newberry, S. C., who
had been practicing in Shelby since

Dr. Singleton, a graduate of
Benedict College jn Columbia, was
a member of one of Newberry'*?
most prominent families. His
~ father. Dr. G. W. Singleton, is a
veteran physician,, and his mother
Mrs. Nam-y Singleton, is well
known in rehtrtous, civic and social
circles.
Police and firemen, who still
have been unable to determine
what cause the explosion and fire,
raid it apparently started in the
second-story offices., of the twostory
bifc-k building where Dr.
Singleton lived.
Associates of Dr. Singleton said
he had taken sides in a controversy
at a Shelby Xegro. ehool, 'nit
police said they could find no
connection between this and the
mysterious explosion and fire.
