GARY, IND. (ANP) ?When a
history of Negro business is written,
one of the first chapters will
tell the American success story of
' Andrew Means, soft spoken Gary
contractor, who rose from steel
worker to master home builder.
' Means stepped off a Pennsylvania
train here 35 years ago with
just $6 in his pockets. After, '''pull.
* - ing pairs" at number 10_furnace
in the Sheet and Tin Mill for two
years, he decided to-stop making
steel and make homes, for Gary's
ill-housed population. ...r.
?Todny7"junt"~a scant "two blocks
from where he got off the train,
Andrew Means directs two corporations
which do combined business
of a million dollars yearly buildings
.blind reds of homes here and in
tha Chicago area.
Since Means built his first house
for sale in the 500 block of West
...vi.m; hi me urms he
head have constructed over 1,000
glomes.
Brick and frame houses built by
Andrew Means and his associates
spread across the city. There are
residences on the north side. There
are Moans Model Community, F.
D. Patterson Village and Booker
T. Washington Terrace apartments
* in the city's Midiown. There i s
Means Park Manor near Roosevelt
high school1, and a second Manor
going up in the shadow of the new
^Lincoln school on 19th avenue.
. In the beginning the going was
rough for Mg^ps. He got his -start
in business on $90 borrowed from
his wife, a borrowed table and a
borrowed typewriter.
His first office, was a tarpaper
shack on a sandy lot at 2127
Washington street. In 1922 h c
built four houses and made about
$800 ? a lot of money in those
days. He had the ability to produce
the home and the market
was ripe for the homes, but money
to finance his - projects was ha rd
to get.
Bankers turned him down on the
theory that investing in Negro
homes was aria^y business. The
- federal Housing Administration re
Jtv-ktu ma applications too.
"They always found something
' wrong with a Negro application to
borrow money to build a house,"
Means rec^ljsfi
"But Means fought to get what
he wanted. He complained to FHA
headquarters in Washington and
one day when a FHA official was
- visiting Gary he buttonholed him
and explained his problem.
The FHA official advised Means
to find a vacant lot and apply aTgain.
Means secured the option to
the old Gary circus grounds near
25th avenue"and Jackson stfbet and
; a loan to build Means Model Community
\va^ approved.
That was all the Gary home developer
needed, His fame spreadarid
his homes sold faster than he
could build them.
Now, bank, saving and loans associations
and insurance companies
throughout the nation show no
hesitancy in approving loans for
his projects, which keep 31 contractors
busv vesr' noo
"Andy^-Meaps, who is nearipg
60, attributes much of his success
to two famous men who were his
personal friends ? the late Booker
T. Washington and George
Washington Carver, both of whom
taught him while he attended Tuskegco
Institute
It was at Tuskegee too, that
he met and married his lovely
wife, Kptie, who was a secretary
- in Booker T. Washington's office.
Today the Means live in a luxurious
$100,000 home in Gary and
both are active in eivicAnd social
affairs.
When he's not building houses,
"Andy" Means works toward building
a better community for Gary's
Negro citizens. He is a member of
the Gary - Urban League Chamber
of Commerce, YMCA, NAACP,,
Midtown businessmen's Associa
7 tion,r ^3hr., uf?the?Dea. board irt
First Baptist church, and a Gary
FEPC commissioner.
Additionally, he has a seat on
the national council of the Urtited
NegTrr College Fund, is chairman
of the executive committee of the
Tuskegee Institute Alymni Association
and a member of the general
- board pf the National Council o i

This year millions of Americans
of all faitlis will join in daily Bible
reading from Thanksgiving to
Christmas in the twelfth annual
observance of Worldwide Bible
Heading, sponsored by the
American Bible Society.
The program, which began when
a U, S. marine on Guadalcanal
wrote his mother asking that the
family join him in reading the same
ftassages of Scripture each day,
ins spread in scope to the peoples
of more than forty nations.
'Hie readings are without note?f?-??or
comment, and one may use
whatever version of the Bible he
prefers. ' ?-?
