Joseph W. Morris
Teacher Beloved
Continued from page 1
?Slates, Mr. MorriB was olecte
Professor of Mathematics, and An
cient Languages, Principal of th
Normal and Preparatory Depart
mcnts. The .school was moved t'
. Columbia, the capitol of the state
and the named changed to Allot
University after the founder of
the church. Professor Morris served
as secretary, and instructor
in l-'ie Law Department. Subsequently,
he was elected president.
He was a faithful member o f
Bethel African M. E. Church, Columbia.
and was several times cleeted
a lay member of the Cuneral
Conference.
Professor Morris was slight of
build, wore a becoming mustache,
had a pleasing, eloquent voice
which rang like a silver bell. He
stood erect and walked like a soldier.
He was a strict disciplinarian
and delisted to drill the students.
Ho-was dearly beloved anil
liiebiy H^pt't'fl'il. It vv;iK mi Irmplration
to see him walk across the
back. Ah, my young man," was a
favorite expression. At ten o'clock
P. M. he always walked the Arnett
Hall, the boy's dormitory to
see that the occupants were in
bed. The genteel0 Professor, idea!
?^- teacher was- the - incarnate spirit
of Alien- University. Choice spirits
were his contemporaries as faculty
members, such as \V. I>. CjTtippeilc,
J. L. Baumgardner, Fraze)ia
Campbell, and C. G.' Garrett,
hut Joseph W. Morris?stood i n
lonely solitude above them all. As
the years increase since he passed
from the.area of humanity, his
.contribution will he iViore largely
maximized and appreciated.
