Iii this action the Board consist ed the evident lack of sufficient public interest, decreasing revenue and the prospect of less income from sale of Washington Carvci half dollars which heretofore, provided principal suport; and it ret ognized the health status of Sid liey J. Phillips, Memorial President, upon whom administration of the organization practically depend. The commemorative half dollar? honoring Hooker T. Washington and fJeorgo W. Carver were first issued in 1946, and approximately two and one-fifth millions of the ten separate issues of coins have lieen purchasead hy the puldic at varying premiun\s above the face value of 50 cental. President Phillips reports that the. major portion of sales has been made since 1950 when, to promote wider incentive, these coins?have- beeur-available for only 10 cents above face value, further commeatinj! on coin sales.
