Mrs. Seipio Jones, teacher erf seci-nd gi;7do. brought to us a very inspiring paper on "Modern v "thuds of Teaching the Social Sciences in our Present Day School." Mrs. Jones brought t</ us "inany interesting fret* which were quite informative and instructive. Highlights in her paper were as follows: (1) Modern methods in geography involve much oral instruct ion, the socialized recitation, ?emphasis upon wtfchtl geography, (cause"" mil effect), geographic" principles, and the assignment of type studies and problems. (2) The teacher must know not only geography, "but also many related subiects. She must be acquainted with a wide range of geoerrphieal literature and teaching devices. tShe must be skillful in applying her knowledge, and must be master of the art of teach ing it.? : ? (3) In the socialized recitation, the pupils are active participants exchanging and enrichening their ideas, and selecting problems for 4\. i ui uitrr BLUuy. (4) The teacher's skill* is shown by the way her pupils, use the text book. (5) Topical outlines are heloful in making assignments and topical romitations. They may he prepared hv the teacher, by the pupil, or jointly by teacher and pupils. (6) A pood peopranhv teacher is a pood drill master; This implies that she knows -how to se b?et the thinps that require memorizinp, and is skillful in conducting the needed drill lessons. Thn navi^riment should turn t-> mt t.vo r>*>tnral interest in the wor'd and its people, and should eeru-rallv taks' the form of challenginp problems. ( ) The pupil can most economically learn bv the intensive kt'x'v ferw-?.
