Saturday, September 6, 1941 Bishop Davis Closes S Convocation Meeting j By WTTT Bowman Kittrell College, N. C., Aug. 26? The ne\vs editor of the Palmetto Leader, along with Dr. W. B. L. Clark, Revs. I. O. Simmons, H. B. Butler, and W. J. Roberson left Columbia early Wednesday morning for Kittrell College and ar. lived there in time to get a iirood breakfast, given by. our personal ' friends,. Dr. and Mrs. E. F. G. Denv president of the college. #This was our first visit to Kittrell College and naturally we were fill with questions concerning the place, etc. We met many of the leader,, of the second Episcopal district and to the man they praised Bisbop IVm leadership and many <xf tnm tit't'iart'd twpy nrv nut y?inn to have anyone but Bishop Davis. The convocation wag like clock work, no misunderstanding, no loafing around, no loud talking, but each teacher Avith hi? or her i ;f?. ,DA?d/ A 1 a/4T7 Class was in une iui num. m. by the name of Mrs. Harris would lAfc see to it that you attend some class. Bishop Davis taught the Mission class daily. His explanation concerning Augustine was just wonderful. He spoke to his clasn with authority. Every speaker praised ..-BishQpLDaYis_fnrAvmDingJhii.f ight of the Sunday School Union at Nashville. . A sweet noon day sermon was . preached by Dr. H. R. Tomlyn of Baltimore. Dr. Tomlyn is a native of Georgia. Our information is, that Dr. C. C. Ferguson of BaltiA more will be the second districl. Episcopal candidate for the bishopric and the leaders of the district who we talked with declared that Bishop Flipper is the greatest bishop on the bench in every respect. The Bishops have decided to ?let him have his way?in?every things in order that his health ma> be prolonged. This statement brought long applause from the South Carolina represe 11 talives, as it is the sentiments of South Carolina to have him preside over us until he is called up higher by the master. The Rev. W. J. Roberson represented the ministers, Prof. C. G. Garrett represented the laymen in the chapel, and Mrs. L. H. Hemniingway, funnelly of South Carolina but .now of Washington represented the women of South Carolina. Bishop Davis h:.d a special dinner prepared for the South Carolinians. To say the least, it was a dinner among dinner. While at the table Bishop Davis discussed^ "school days." He said, when you 'finish at Howard you should know but when you finish at Allen University, you know and can easily take care of yourself under any condition. Mrs. Katie Bertha Hurst, The beloved wife of the late" Bishop Hurst, was there with her soiV-Dr. Hurst. She arose in the_ chapel and let them know she was irom ?>outn taronnu. Those from South Carolina who took dinner with the'Bishop were: Drs. W. B. L. Clark, I. O. Simmons, W. J. Robinson, H. B. Butler, W. S. Mims, L. C. Butler, Prof. Garrett and others. President Dent is doing; well at Kittrell. The enrollment is large for a church school, when you consider this college was closed several years because of bad rumors here and there concerning it. Bishop Davis and President Dent deserve much praise for continuing _ the literary work at Kittrell. The leaders trom^ Baltimore at-. tending this, convocation were: Revs. Walton, Davis, Bailey, Wells. I Mitchell and Nqmaks; from Vir- I n,-c M R Davis. J. A. I Young, Walker, Drummond, Ste\V'urd, Shield, Harris, T. C, Seott, evangelist preacher;" Williams. Easteland, Williams;' from North Carolina: Drs. Carness, Stephen son. Legigon, Thurston, Barkley, Seott, Larkins, Cowan, ot?r Russell at Winston J3alem who is fine; Troybjefjeld, and J. Ar 1 Valentine. Our. Dr. I. H. Alston toolt us around and explained things to us. Dr. Alston was recently elected dean <rf the theological department of Allen University. Dr. H. B. Butler left the party for Washington, D. C., where Ire is scheduled to preach for Dr. Pick ett.
