A - gronp of ^ Greenville people motored to White Plain8 Baptist church in Laurens county Sunday ufternoon to attend services. Rev. P. G. Barton is pastor of the church. Those in the group were: Mrs. Pearl Potter. Mrs. Estelle Freeman, Mr. and Mrs. Palmers Bell and Mrs. Mary Gary. Messrs. Ed. Williams, T. P. Pinson and Elliott Cureton had a pleasant afternoon Sunday attending the singing convention in Belton. Mr. an^. Mrs. Peterson of Vldul>a, Ga.,' are visiting Mrs. Peterson's relatives on Glover St. Mrs. Peterson, now emtfployed as? ?^ instructor at the Ailey Rosenwald school of VidaliaTis the former MiBS Marie Cureton, a graduate of Sterling high school and Georg ia State College. Mrs.' Benrnie Dell,e McClendon of Baltimore, is visiting Rev. and Jarrett and Mrs. Julia McKinney at Travelers Rest. Mrs. McClendon is the daughter of Mr. B. J. James, who for many years, was superintendent of the Sunday school at Springfield church. Mr. and Mrs. T. P-_Pinson,t their , daughter, Mrs. Sarah Pinson Irby. Mr. Thomas Irby, and Mrs. Carrie Johnson were visitors in Varnville recently. ~ Mrs. Lena M. Long of Bulls Alley, is having something of a family reunion these days. From the north and from the distant southwest her children have come tu spend their vacations with her ller daughter, Mrs. Eddie Mac Tarrent. with her husband. Mr James Tarrent; her son an j daughter in law, Mr. and Mrs Walter Long?all from Toledo .n the Buckeye state are here for a few days. Her son. Mr. Henry Long of Dallas, Texas, is also spending his vacation in Greenville. Mrs. ?x>ng appears to be almost a8 young as her visiting bit as lively as any of them, as they go around from place to place attending revival meetings and .seeing old friends and acquaintances. Word has just reached the writer of this column that Prof. Lawrence Butler Bowen passed away Monday. In spite of the fact that he had been ill for several months his death is definitely a shock. Nine years ago Jje completed his *high school work at Sterling, and four years later wag graduated from Staie Col1^0 lege at Orangeburg with special recognition for scholarship. He taught at Seneca and in the public high school at Marion. And while working at the latter -place he ? married Minn Ruth Washington of _. Florence.^ Jfis wife, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bruce ?owen otf _ Ann St., and his brother. Prof llrrry Bowen, all have been diligent in their efforts to help him rpcover. The community shares their sorrow because one who was so well prepared to serve has pass?d from us, Mrs. Sarah Lee Scott oi Cin cinnati, Ohio, is visiting her parents, Air, and Mrs. L. W. Leg of Ann St. .Mrs. Frances Wutts wrunt, 87, died at her home near Crosss Hill % in Laurens county Tuesday, August if. Mrs. Grant was a faithful christian worker. Although unable ?heranwe nf the infirmities of age1 to attend religious services durv k ing the last yearg of her life. ' she continued to the end t o bt anv excellent example of christian womanhood. She is survived by seven children: Mr. Henry Arto Grant of Cross Hill; Mrs. Frances Virginia Pyles of Cross Hill; Mr. Willie Grant of Fountain Inn; Mrs. Henrietta G. Barksdale of Greenville; Mrs. Lillie G. Anderson of Detroit, Mich.; Mrs. Mamie G. Hill of Laurens, Pa.; and Mr. ^ Tommle Grant of Cross Hill. Thirty five grand children, twenty one great grand children and a num" ber of other relatives also survive. Prof. Hubert of Benedict College, was the week end guest of Rev. and Mrs. W. SCHOOL DOTS 1 \\ ell the summer rush is over today, August-We have had a grand month of study and pleasure and we can assure you that this month has been used to the best advantage. The juniors and seniors enjoyed e 20 minutes "Get together" with the ex-students and graduates of I this school who are spending their vacation here. The group met in the library where a delicious course of ice cream and cookies were served. Mr. Earnest H. Coleman has returned from his trip from Tallahassee, Pla. He visited the Fla. A. and M. Carolina and Madam Florence Jackson attended the Beautician meeting that was held in Charleston, S. C. in June. Quite a large delegation and interesting meeting. Much praise is due our effiicient President, Mrs. Annie Belle Evans for the intelligent manner in which she presided- and carried on. The next meeting, June, 1942 is to be in our City, Georgetown,( S. C. the best city on the map. We feel safe in saying that you will not regret coming to our city .on the Sampit and vVaceamaw rivers. Mrs. Florence Jackson was elect ed as one of the state officers. We | the Beautician club that they might help in putting over a great progratrr at that time. We are having a meeting Monday, September 8 at the beauty parlor of Mrs. Florence Jackson on Wood St. at 4:30 p.m. You are asked to be present, business of importance. Well said "you should be also ready for you know not the minute or the hour," to my surprise Wednesday, June 10, 1941 the State Board of Cosmetic Art Examiners and the Inspector came in our beauty school. They found the class of seven at work. They are trying to have all beauty operators and shops in the State of South Carolina to work under the required laws and to have efficient -teachers bearing Teacher's Certificate and abiding by the curriculum and rules. ' They are also trying to find bootleg and wild cat hairdressers and they will find Uibhi. ?1? would advise those who desire to work in this field to go to some beauty school and prepare yourself and get on the main line so as to avoid trouble.
