HOME DEMONSTRATION

^N AIKEN
By Douglass Ha'l
Two years" ago, Mabel Lee Shelton
gradurted from South Carolina
State College with a B. S. degree
in home economies. Today
she is home demonstration ageQt
in Aiken county, directing, through
16 home demonstration club$, tho^
^activities of 576 women.
?r The recreational 4-H canip
\vhich_ is held annually was conducted
at the Palmetto Park just
aeross the?bridge in South Carn^^Jinu
recently, with rn attendance
^^jf 50 boys and girl? from all over
Aiken county. The camp was in
charge of George M. T. Dowdy,
farm ager.t, who was absent when
this reporter visited the camp, and
MISS MABEL T. SHELTON
Mul-l T. Shelton, home demonstration
agent.
It was meal time when we arrived
in camp. The youngsters
were fed wholesome, well-cooked
food. They crowded in to get it
but thev were having such a good
f time they couldn't eat it. They
craved the water in the pondT the*
playground, and you can take
it from me they ate in record time.
"Each child furnished his awn
food, and we furnished his transportation
to camp," Miss Shelton,
revealed, "and there is really jiot
^kjiiuch more" to it. In order for "them
^Vto qualify to come to camp they
must complete a definite project
and it must come up to certain
qualifications. The boys and girls
here are from the sections of Wag
?-ner, "Ocean Grove, Red Hill, Sally
and Ridge Spring, S. C."
Mabel Shelton Increases Clubs
During the first month of employment
she furthered her training
in extension by attending a
short course of Farm and Home
Demonstration agentc at Hampton
Institute for u p?r;o 1 of three
weeks.
Immediately upon her return,
she made r complete, surw y of the
county including 18 communities
^fcwith the assistance of the farm
^^agent, G. T. Dowdy. She added
? two home demonstration clubs to
the present number, making a to:
