Bishop and Mrs. J. S. Flipper
Souxh Carolina was indeed
proud to see its great leader,
Bishop Flipper, attending the truslee
board?meeting- last week ond
~ also witnessed the commencement
exercises of Allen University. He
looked the very picture of health,
and conducted the affairs with a
master mind. Say what you will
but the people of thi? state arc
?-?really pr-outl nf -their_great leadejc,_
They delight in following him and
do so willingly, and with glad
hearts. Bishop Flipper gets the
greatest results with no censuring
afld abusing me n. His district
stands at the head of the column
where South Carolina is today.
Mrs. S. A. Flipper, his queenly
wife, i.. truly a helpmate to her
husband. The call meeiiiij? IUr UlP'
w?jmen issued by Mrs. Flipper,
wmi responded to from all sections
in the state. The women are
are loud in their praises of the
-nrtctress on the~pHTT"oT the Bishop's
wife, and of the business transacted
in that special called meet"
Allen's Commencement
* . * *
The above occasion wars' one of
the best held the school foi
years. President S. R. Higgins is
being highly commended on all
sides for the administration he is
giving our school in Columbia.
There?bbpttis to he perfect harmony
between "the"^president and
faculty. The same is true as to
the student body. All presiding
elders of the state made great reports.
We were not able to attend
the trustee board meeting but
heard of the great session. Truly
there is a nice day for the A. M.
E. church in Soutk Carolina. We
heard that the entire faculty of
the school was reelected t?y one
single motion. That was ? new
thine under the sun. and spoke
volums for the able president and
his efficient staff of teachers. We
did not hear the addresses of Drs.
R. L. Lemon, L. D. Gamble, and
Murph, son of Dr. J. W. Murph
of Charleston, but we heart! that
they were among the, /best delivered
upon those occasions.
Hon. Willard W. Allen
The above named person who is
grand maHWinbf the Freeiahd Ati-"
cepted Masons of the Maryland
jurisdiction, delivered one of the
finont addrunooo to the gradunL
ing class of Allen University we
have ever heard. He represents an
- insurance, mortgage Joans, and a
real estate company in Baltimore.
His address at Allen ought to have
been broadcast to every college
in America where candidates for
diplomas were to be advised and
instructed. In this writer's opinion.
his speech was the solution, if
heeded, to the Negro problem,- or
I might say. the entire problem
of America's people. I have known
Mr; Atlen as a htgtr fraternal officer
for many years, but unless
you know him as an orator of
the first magnnitude, you don't
- know- him. H is address-has been tho
talk of Columbia and- the state
ever since. Dr. D. H. Stanton war
one of the outstanding guests at
Allen s commencement. He rep<
resents the. American Bithe Society,
and is one of the most able
Y-hnvhrtprs in mil- inrift.) group. He
-enjoys the -confidence" of both
white and colored. The doctoj
electrifies any gathering he stands
before. When ever fie enters a~
meeting it iK announced by various
applauses. Both Dr. Stanton
and Hon. Allen subscribed to the
Palmetto Leader.
Mr^Joseph A. Robertson
We are indebted to Mr. Robertson
.for, -lis yearly Subscription
to the Palmetto Leader. He is
manager of the Crescent Cleaners
Club, 191 Spring St., Charleston,
which i<, among the best in
the state, white not excluded. IL
an inspiration to those of our racial
group to see the kind of plant
owned and controlled by the above
character. Don t miss this press-'
3*- mg club when you are in Charleston
and want the best work done.
