R- THE OLD GRAY
By Re>'. E. Philip Ellis
For years many have though
thut the National Association for
the Advancement of Colored People
was for the purpose of proB?:
tectlng Negroes W'tJO were committing:
the worst crimes, but
that was a mistaken idea-."- The
object of this Association is to
see that Negroes receive justice
at the hands of the courts. Since
EEr1 this Itt true, every Negro in Ameiica
should be identified with this
v movement. It is true when many
of our racial group get this justice.
it will be the prison farms,
chain gangs, electric chair, gallows
and everything else. While
that is true, any number of those
t ijL.? accused-among us will -go ?free,
when the Association comes t o
their rescue. All Negroes the
world over should be members
and keep up their dues.
Eg Charleston under the leadership
of Dr. W. H. Miller is forging
Be. ahead. Dr. R. I. Lemon has been
the instrument in this city thru
Ft? Which mattV FaVF" joined. OthCt
Wilson, R. E. Brogdon, J.H. Pearson.
The Local Branch meeting
j t* here at Ebenezer church was a
j great eueeess-. And the - Mass
, . .Meeting?at- the_same. jdace^ was
among the best ever witnessed by
the Charleston Association. Dr. D.
, N. Wilson wa? highly commended
for his efforts in i making?these
meetings iwhat they were. The
| . Loual Branch meeting of the AsIf
. sociation at Emanuel church with
Dr. R. E. Brogdon pastor was
very good. Dr. R. T. Lemon who
was chosen by the Association to
represent it at a special meeting
in Washington. D. C., made his
> renorL whidh was?tho best ever
submitted by any representative.
At this meeting, "The Old Gray"
was named head of the Publicity
Committee. Our next meeting
will be at Morris Street Baptist
..church. Dr. J. C. Dunbar, pastor.
Another Movement
\ < AH Negroes should purchase
h Christmas Seals. It's true quite
,?' a few take advantage_Qf_ these
' sales, but it is sad to state that
that the masses pay no attention
^p""thir all important health pro?teetion.
Manjr lives have been
saved bv the sale of Christmas
seals, it uoes seem mat irnnKiny
Negroes' should give their
fullest support to those selling
?these-"seals:; In Charleston, Columbia,
and any number?of?metropolitan
cities T. B. Camps are
stationed, and the patients t!%rein
present a pitiful spectacle.
The truth is, all of them would
be In their graves w?ie~it not for
such institutions which are supported
by the sale of Christmas
frr?' Seals. ??
