Men's Club of Sai,nt '
.. Luke's Church
Helps Needy
The Men's cliib of Si. laike's
Episcopal church is making an
effort this year to carry as much
Christmas cheer as possible to the
unfortunate^~bf. Columbia and vicinity.
* The club met last Thursday
evening at the residence of
Mr. Palmer Wilson, .1719 Gadsden
street irt order to perfect plans,
for giving baskets to the needy
families of the city. This meeting
was unique in at least two
ways. First, it carried with it
the spirit of social inter-course
among men of like minds, and
secondly, it . carried with it the
spirit of brotherhood to all men.
Miss Wilhelrnina Roberts, case
worker with the Family Welfare
society, met with the men and re
viewed the conditions of the needy
families in Columbia and discussed
the types of needs existing aniong
them. She said that there
are one hundred and twenty families
on the rolls of the welfare
society which should be helped.
She also said that some of these
families could do-their own spend
in# quite well, and would be given
money. By spending themselves,
she said, their children would not
lose confidence in them at a time
when all children of other parentsare
receiving Christmas eheei
from their mothers and fathers.
Miss Roberts said, however, that
there were some families which
could not spend wisely, and would
be given Christmas baskets. President
I. Harry Goodwin and Secretary
E. C. Games told the club
that all the baskets which the
club would donate except those
which are given to the needy families
of St. Luke's church should
?be-given throuch the Welfare so-'J
ciety. Mr. Games said that this
would be one way in which the
club would know that those who
are not actually able to? pro\ide
for themselves would he helped.

sions of these two men. At the J'
suggestion of Mr. Andrew W.
Simkins it was* decided that the
baskets would be more than mere
baskets of staples to feed hungry
^baskets should not only bring to
the recipients the necessities of
life, but that they' should also
bring to them some of the niceties
which they are unable to get, and
? which every person should have
at this season of the year in order
that it might seem like Chl'iSt ~
mas. The club heartily agreed
with Mr. Simkins in this matter.
At the close of the business
meeting, the club enjoyed a most '
palatable, wholesome, and delici- 1
ous turkey ?upper as the guests 1
of one of its members, Mr. Palm- '
er Wilson. Among the outside '
guests present at tbis meeting.and '
who made short talks congratu- '
lating these men on the %ery fine 1
work which they are doing in the*'
church anri in the community were 1
Miss Wilhelmina ^Rdberts, Profes- '
