for Alexander, Va., after spending
a few days with his sister
and "brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs.
Samuel Aiken. Mr. Alfred and
Rey. John L. Aiken, his nephews
took hini to Charleston, Summerville,
the Santee-Cooper project
and visited a number of relatives
end friends.

Columbia lost one of its most valuable
citizens. He was stricken
Saturday morning June 29th about
830 with apoplexy and died
at 3:00 p.m. the same day.
His funeral was held at First
Calvary Baptist church, July 2 at
3 o'clock p.m. by the Rev. S. S.

Union Baptist church; Rev. Bail- _
<?y, Rev. Harrison and other ministers
on the rostrum.
- Mr.. Butler was born and lived
In Columbia all his life. Ha was
a devoted member of First Calvary,
giving his presence, spiritual
and financial aid to the cause
of Christ. _
As a eitizen he was active in all
racial uplifts on many occasions
where deserving boys were striving~"~to
get through school. Mr.
Butler has on many occasions
handed boys of no relation at all
as much as $10.00 and encourag*ed
them to go forward, and when
his friends were in financial distress
they could always find relief

Butler, and he was known to many
