C.?The fourth | annual South Carolina open tennis tournament snactioned by the American Association will. bt. played July 3, 4, and tat South Carolina State A. & M. Colege, ac cording to an announcement of the tournament committee of the Orangeburg Tennis Club. These dates, which are earlier than in previous years, will permit summer students of the first session of summer school held at S. C. Sate College to see some of Ujte ranking national players in action on the courts here. Rank iug players who enter the Norta C.?Jina OJpen June 25-29 will find it convenient to include the South Carolina Open in their itnenary. The South- Carolina Open' Uis\ year received special recognition as being one of the three major tournments of twenty-three tout naments sanctioned by the American TenniB Association. This yar it ia bidding for a larger entry of rankng national players? Information has been already received by officials that Jinimie McDaniels, national siiigles and doubles champion, and Richard Cohen, national doubles champion, will be among the entries this year. Warren Weaver, defending South Carolina .singles champion and "Babe" Jones, his doubles partner,, are expected to be on hand. Other well known national players who are expected include Or. John L. McGriff, Sr.; and Dr. John L. McGriff, Jr., South Carolina double runners up; Dr. 1-11 wood Downing,. General Field secreary American Tennis Assoclirt^ Ion and Harmon Smith. Among the Juniors expected to enter are Joe King, Robert Ashford, William McTeer and Charles Lewis. Lyda Belle Green, defending State -women's champion, is expected to head the women's list of entries. Collier, Pastor Newberry, S. C.?We were in the spirit of Fathers' Day today and had much success; Our Supt., ~ Mr. T, A. Bobb, opened Sunday School at the proper time. Following S. S., our pastor delivered a wonderful sermon. His text was taken from St. Matt. 17: 4. He used as a subject :If its the Lord's will ,let us do something.' We gained many thoughts to apply to out daily , life. A rally waa held and the total amount Teported for the day wa $32,58. We are looking forward to a grand time on the first Sunday in July. We hope to serve the Lord's supper and also Group No. 2 of the New Enoree S. S. Convention will meet with us that date. Miss Lillle R. Jackson, a recent graduate of Friendship College is happy to be home again. We are still praying for our 111 people and hope them a prompt recovery. To our sorrow death visited our community and took a faithful mother and church worker, Mrs. Carry Reaves Esgue. She had been shut in for sometime because of illness. But the end came June 6, 1940 at the Columbia Hos pital. We loved her but God loved her best. Miss Salley had just graduated from the Wilkerson High School in Orangebprg u week prior- to her death which came as a shock to her community .as well as to her family. " asserted the fact, that he felt a mong friends in Charleston especially in Morris Brown, who had 1 ' contributed in no small degree to 1 i his- election, as well as to his sup port at Allen.
