WHITTAKER President , South Caolina's only State col-j lege for Negroes is the State Agricultural and Mechanical Col- j leg?, located at Orangeburg. The College was founded by the State Legislature in 1896. The bill ere- i ating the institution was sponsor-' ed by 'Honorable Thomas E, ler, who became 'its firpresi-' dent.^ He served for fifteen years T~ and was succeeded .by R. S. Wil-' kinson, one of the leading educa- I tors that South Carolina has pro-! . uced. The college offers standard four year courses in agriculture, home economics, education, arts and sciences, business ' and mechanicarts. The organization and equip ment are superior and the pro _ gram of instruction?is?approved by the State Department of Edu^ cation," the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and the Association of American Colleges. A competent resident staff of 70 persons, educated m many of the leading universities of America, offer instruction, not only in'the technical" branches of learning, but also in such fundamentals as citizenship training, character building and vocational guidance. IDoctor M. P. Whittaker, a native of Sumter, S. C., is the pres ent head of the institution, and under his leadership, the College is in the midst of a five-year million dollar expansion program.
