Dr. J. S. Earle Speaks
To Baptist Brotherhood
of So. Car. TO
THE TRUSTER HOARD OF
AfORRIS COL LEO E AND TO
THE ALUMNI OF MORRIS
CULLEGE
To The Baptist Brotherhood of |
South Carolinaj - I
MY DEAR BRETHREN:
-r*
For more than fifteen years, it
was my privilege to talk with you
under the above caption. Under
this caption, I gave the outlines;
and policies both in general and J
detail, whit-h was followed by you,
to the extent that we all can look (
-with pride- iH?on?what?has ? been
accomplished by us in the field of |
missions and education. Since I
gave the" reign of leadership over
to my friend and brother, Dr. H.j
H. Butler, I have kept silent and
watched with eager eye, the trend j
of your advancement and progress
Yhe unchallenged rapidity with'
' which you have fconc forward?-in?
education and missions in church'
building and organization, in keep'
in^ abreast of religious - world'
movements, have made me feel
that my labor and toils and sac-1
rifice with you for fifteen consecu-1
tive years were not in vain: - . '
i ? But, alas: ooufh Carolina Baptists
are facing another crisis. A
crisis which must be faced and
dealt with-s-with simple manhood
and common sense.
" When I came to the leadership
of the Baptists some years ago,
we were faced with a crisis. Yesj
a crrsis very great. We had lost
our hero of .missions, in the person
of Dr. "Ed White." Morris
College was in the making?almost
in her embryotic state, and
was in a heavy debt. After fifteen
years as" your leader, I turn"
~ ed the leadership of the Baptist
iamiiy 10 ur. Mutier at ~Tireen-~
wood, with our mission work just
as it stands today; arid MOrriS
College, with a fine student body
and faculty equipment, the same
a*--it- is today, and not- - a?dimomortgaged
debt.
The crisis facing us today is:
Morris College is again in debt'
and without a President.
Again I 'come to your rescue.Again
my service is offered you.
I shall make no campargn. 1
shall not ask any one to vote for
me as President of Morris College
I shall offer^ the denomination my
service upon my record and my
experience in the field of education
On the street in Spartanburg
last Saturday, one of the trustees
of Morris College said to me: "No
man will be able to save Morris
College out of her present conditicrhj'Mvho
cannot get the ear ot
the entire Baptist family of South
Carolina." To this I heartily agreed.
Well let's see. I wag e
? looted?as?President of the?Stato
Convention fourteen consecutive
times, with only one vote regisf.
'.tared against me, and that was
registered with compromise?that
he felt that some one else should
have the chance of holding the
presidency of the Convention before
we are all dead. For fourteen
years Morris College went thru a
constructive building period, all
~ debts paid. Not a single dollar
ever went shy; and we never had
a single Squabble over money.
How about that record for business
leadership? 1
At Greenwood, when I of my
own accord resigned the presidency
of the Convention, the Brotherhood
had prior to this time placed
me at the head of the mission
work of the State, that I might
* save this phase of the work
Hence for two years I went over
this State, and I don't say i t
boastingly. but I .had' the Broth
erhood of South Carolina as completely
at my command, when it
comes to advice and confidence as
I have ever had my family.
To The Trustee Board of Morris:
" Upon you rests the responsibil-1
ity of making the selection of a
President for Morris College. Wo
are standing at the fork of the
road in the history of Morris College.
If Morris College is saved
much of this youthful, unskilled.
inexperfcWced ambition" on th e'
part of some of our brethren must
he brushed aside. Some real, old i
time horse sense has got to be I

button holing, no bribing are going
to assure the proper man f^t
the head of Morris CoTTege. Thero
are fathers in this State who will
vote a man for the presidency of
Morris College, and then reluctantly
an^ trembling;" send their
daughters- to the school, and eight
outS?of every ten will hatch u p
liomc excuse and send their daugh
tors to other schools, while Morris
College will be slowly dying
for students and money.
I hereby offer my service to you
as President of Morris College
upon one record. I have been in
the field of education for over 30
years. For thirteen years I have
had the experience as the head of
a boarding school, Cedar Hill A*
cademy, Spartanburg, S. C. If
you, upon investigation find where
one reproach of any kind came
against me, while_for 8 months
