hfegr<> Services \ ?
My candid opinion -of religious
services in most Negro churches v
is that all of the good they try to T
accomplish in the beginning is de- 1
stroyed just before or at the con- ^
elusion of them. The first big ob- <
stacle in the service is that the *
. Qveragft Neyro preacher preach- d
es too long. Their chief objective ?
is to get up an excitement at any 1
cost. They don't realize that their
congregation want food for
thought as wen na sniritual en- __
thusiasm."~ And one or two good
Wholesome thoughts are as many
as an audience is prepared to re^ ^
ceive at anyone service. Usually
these few thoughts are advanced
in the first 20 qjinutes of the seripon
and the rest of his thunder ~
is thrown away while the people
sit in their seats and pity him^/The
minister must learn that he
can consult his library during the
week and gather sufficient materin
1 o f ai' eavnrfl 1 cnvnirvne A nrl ttrVion
he undertakes to put it all in one
its too long for any congregation.
^ The next reflecti^p which adds to
, the destruction of Negro services
is the manner in which the collections
are taken. That part of the
service in many of our churches
is a regujar frolic. ~The- officers
at the table cut monkey capers
and exchange-jokes untiL the people
becomeT'disgustfed". After ail,
when the benediction is said they
feel more like they have been to a
theater than, a church service. To
. be continued next issue.
Beard And Farmer
Bishop. J. S. Flipper. D.D., in
appointing RdV. L. -L. Farmer pre
siding elder of the Charleston
-district has never made a better
assignment. Dr. Farmer, is the
type of man for such a position.
He is well trained and a reaF
Christian gentleman. Both ministers
and laymembers <yf that' district
will find their leader to be
a gr^at "big brother". Farmer has
always been a good follower, and
a successful pastor. Only thosfc

On the oth^r hand there are ~
