STOP THELEAK
By B. -A. Flshbtrrne
Morrla College, Sumter, S. C.
The title of th,s article Was created
out of an incident occurred
Christmas eve, -on the shurei of a
very beautiful canal, which empties
its rippling waters into the
majestic stream Qf the Waccamaw
river. 1 was on my way to the
beautiful Sandy Island with ,:ts
t-andy hills,-etunted oaks and ever
gieen, whispering musical pines,
c 41 ? ..< ......

vices the next day.
On the shores of this canal was
a flat, which is used principally by
the islanders .'n transporting their
rice from the rice fields accross the
streams and rivers to their homes,
during the harvest season. .The
flat contained a load of lumber be.
longing to one a'.l my officers. It
was loadqd. with one end high up
on the beach stranded on the
sand. This officer and his father
were wait ng for the flood tide to
float their flat with its cargo of
lumber,- when presently, the officer
noticed that the end of the flat
down in the water was leaking.
He was successful, temporarily, in
getting a few pieces of old rotted
rugs and with the use of my pock-1
et knife and an ax, stopped the
leak. Bv the time this was done,
the end of the flat down ii) the
water was almost submerged. The
water was bailed out and the half!
sinking end of the flat was above
the surface of the water as the
tide began to rise.
I ^loud . there on. that otack oS,
lumber watching those men working
almost breathlessly, trying to
save their flat from sinking. It is
always my policy to get a lesson
from any and everything possible
which might be applicable to every
day life. I began to think of this
incident and its Comparison with
the lives of men, then the subject
matter came to me "Stop The
Leak".
Here we see the philosophy of |
causes an3~effects. The flowingof-;
the water into the flat was the effect
and the hole or cracks in the,
end of the flat was or were the
causes. When the cause waSj
stopped the effect took care of its
self.
?How many individuals "today
who are sailing the, canals and
streams of life with leaks in the
flats ci* their lives and characters.
How many of us wTio~h&Ve started
on the ocean of some eventful career
and did not take time to examine
and stop the leak or leaks
until the i nflowing waters of some j
bad habits or evil influences overwhelmed
us and we sank beneath!
the surface of the stream of fail- j
ui-es, c sorrows, destruction and
death.
We look around us to day and
we see miseries, woes, failures, un
happiness, and troubfes upbn individuals,
nations and societ/es,
because the leaks were not noticed,
discovered and stopped.
-~(We see sometimes business
flourishing in the sunlight of prosneritv.
onl.. afterward crumbled
bqoeath the dark shadow .of failure.
because the leaks of. cheating,
faTse balances, Kgh class robbery
and dishonesty were not stopped.
In the community, we behold a
shining light, a brilliant star In
the persorr-of a promising youth,
good health, a fine background, lib
eral training and a bright future.
Nevertheless, the brightness of
that shv'ning and brilliant star,
that- promising youth,-faded-and
fell in the mire of shame and disgrace,
beneath the waves of failure,
because he did not stop the
leak of riotous living, drinking, violation
of the physical laws of
health and :mmoinl practices.
The ancient cities of the past
fell, those which' did fall, because
their inhabitants did ".ot stop t*.?J
leaks of, political coiruptions idolatry
and umitfRteousness.
The first J ing of Israel sank beneath
the waters of shame and
destruct'on, because he did not
stop the leak of disobedience.
Absalom* That -beautiiuL young
prince, went- to?bis?doom, because
he did not stop the leaks of muri\3r,
disrespect and rebellion against
his parent.
_ Our chain gangs, penitentiares,
jails and pr.'son houses are filled
todHy because those who are suffering
such fate, more or less, did
not stop the leaks of criminal
thoughts and actions.
Let us all examine our lives and
.-rnractei-s, and wherever we find
leaks of any kind which will injure
and destroy us, leb us stop"them. I
A little leak will a'nk a .great
ship. Remember we are s&iling
on the ocean of life. Let us watch
out for leaks and stop them.
