Rev. E. Philip Ellis - \ \ i
THE LATE W . E. McGEE ~ '
When The Palmetto Leader an- i
nounces here how deeply it de- :
plored, the passing of Mt. W. E. t
McGee of Columbia, who was one s
of the, high oiheials of the South- t
. ... ern Railway- Sysu m, it expresses i
the regret of efury Negro passen- \
ggr and supporter of the entire I
system. The lute Mr. McGee car- ]
ried out that Company's policy to \
the letter in his transactions with J
those of our racial group. He was
always courteous and respectful I
hot only to the leaders of our peo- j
pie but- to those ur humble walks j
ITf" life. Whenever Negro Uelega
films from chine lies and fraternal i
orders were elected to represent I
those bodies in great meetings he.
??? would?take?pleasure in meeting <
them at any place they selected I
and assist them in arranging their
transportation to q.nd from their
destinatwm?Many times he would '
spend more than air hour with
v them iii their meetings, answering
questions and giving them propel
? instruc-Uei^ The colored?fvei- keenly
the loss of such an oilicial
who was'so-considerate of us. But
_the great Southern System made
no mistake when it promoted Mr,
J. Thomas Cobb of Columbia to
the position of Passenger Agent;
and advanced Mr. Clannic L. Toncy
to the office of Ticket Agent. Both
of these fine gentlemen wir assbcitd
with Mr. McGeo for quite a
numbaP of years1. Knowing them
as i do, I can say .of a truth that the
essence of politeness will eon
4inue-in thut^ollice at Columbia.
Their scleetion.nieanrs..tiia.Ltfie__L"om I
pany will still hold the confidence
of all of its patrons. I am. still
representing the Southern System 1
and advocating the same for Negroes
~to make choice' .in , taking
their Christmas vacations this year
This Cnmp.n ny , ?always given Negroes
such accommodation as
th<ty* Were able to purchase.?I ,
know of other systems where reservations
cannot be had for N'e
gro Bishops and otlr.i nice lenders. ~~
The Southern believes that railway
accommodations are business
transactions and have. nothing to
do with, social-equality. Again the
Southern?patronizes N"'rLr'',T ,
prises' in that it advertises in Negro
papers. Consult the columns .
of The Palmetto Leader and you
will find its train schedules. It'- ,
no more than light for Negroes i
?-y to trSveT~oh a railroad that helps ;
them. ""
Dr. Thomas' Meeting.;
It was my happy pleasure to j
attend the Get-to-Gether meetirig
of the Mt. Pleasant Di.-trict over 1
which I)r. J. E. Thomas presides.
Tt. was among the beit that I have( .
over attuned in my life. Dr. ,Tho- 1
mas thrilled the Council with a '
brief message that caught the en-'
tire audit nee.- The meeting was
said, to be one, of the best in the
history of the district. Presiding
- ?Elder Thomas belirves and does
, not seek opportunities to take ad
vantage of a pa star "and "his s&cri-~
. ficing" family. All of his pastors
were pros'int except Kev. carter,
who was sick in bed. When pnstors
lose confidence in presiding
elders they are slow to follow their
leadership. In fact it's hard for {
them to respect them. When a presiding
elder comes to a pastor's
charjge and inquires for disgruntled
people, so as to strengthen
them against the pastor and offer "
his bost charges to ministers i n
other districts six months^hefore-Conferonce,
he is far down the ^
road from the Golden Rule. Do
you call that -religion ?
Dr. T. J. Miles swept the audi- j
ence as a?cycfoneT^ The people ,
said that it was. rt'aRy the spCtTcTf
of a Bishop. It was a master- ,
piece to say the least.. And shows ')
that the Doctor is.jjoocL ..seasoned ^
timber. Enough said.

' Transfers
When Methodism dispenses with F
the Transfer System, I want 'to s
be in Heaven. It has been the
life of the Methodist Church. In
every State ill the Union, there ci
are transferred ministers, from v
other States. The same is true as p
to Episcopal Districts. But when a
a transfer comes in a brand new v
district as a new brand man, he <
should by all means make good
wlien given first class charge, r
lie should consider first that no V

>ne sent for him. And before he
andertakes to dictate the policy
>f that State or District, he should
ell how come he is there. Again
i man calling himself u big preach
ar ami bell ows out- ift -leee?t-htm
twelve months, he ought be " lo:ated
or superannuated at least
intil he can refill his wind-jammer^
Softie transfers have the audacity
o get mad with Bishops and presiding
elders because they refuse
.o kill the native men of the state
md- give them their places. Noj
vonder they have been all over the
Jonnectioh and on their way back.
Let them keep on rolling and they
vill finally land among the Holy
Rollers, 1 *
