"Only three gave any encouragement to the effort. ^ fc Just before the national tournament was to begin, a Charleston {1 tennis i eprcseiitativc, Rev. Ken- N neth Ilughes, made imitiiries about t the possiliihty of his playing in the j nationals in tne name of Charles- j ton. He had been a member of a. New York City club but wished to ' play under th^ colors of South Ca- a j .^lolina. The organizer left Columbia, with a representative for the jun- t tor?lunglce,?A wiving at Wilber- . ~ force, he met the executive oilie^Z ei-s of the association and Rave the names of othcers for five clubs. With the proper fee for memberi ship and charter, an application was made for tho formation of the L South Carolina Tennis association. F This' application was accepted and South Carolina had five votes at the annual tournament.. Back at work in South Carolina in the fall 15K50, efforts were made to make the temporary organization permanent. Several meetings were enllofh-noo hud h quorum. Fi- _ nally in February three clubs sept representatives to Orangeburg? <t where officers were elected for the state body. The officers were J. D. McGhee, president, Columbia; Kenneth Hughes, vice-prosiden|t< Charleston; Lula Ballard, executive secretary, Orangeburg; T. K. Bythewood, corresponding secretary, Orangeburg; W. I). Chappelle M.D., treasurer, Columbia. The ' constitution committee was apnointerl nt. fhn Oiaiin-oVkiiv.r ...r_ ing as follows; p. Jtrwel, chairman, Orangeburg; Kenneth Hughes, Charleston, and T. J Miles, Columbia. Aftei several delays the constitution was adopt-ed, with Camden, Columbia and ** Orangeburg delegates present. At this time, a state tournament was discussed. Orangeburg was accepted as the first place where the annual tournament was to be held July 13, 11, and 15. In order to make the state tehnis-mindod, exhibition matches were played at the suggestion of Lula Ballard and members of the Columbia Recreation club, prahably the most active club in the state. Tfeerfirst exhibition matches were played in Orangeburg when Co- _ t , lumbia sent three men: Colston, | T. J. Miles and Walter Dean a L gainst strong opponents of Stato I College faculty. In these matches I by these threo men, Dawson of State college was nosed out of the l> singles match by Colston and Miles hl^Ms^ai^ nu recently auueu at the reques f the Columbia Recreation clul he girls singles and girls doubles Dr. B. A. Everett, prominent Co onibia physician .donated a tro >hy to be given the winner of th' rirK sing-.cs and to be known a he Ruth Everett trophy.
